senior dog supplement (shedding)

My awesome adopted streetdog is now almost 9. (I got her at 9 months). She’s on total HW/flea prevention with no evidence of fleas, but is more itchy than she has ever been. I think its because she’s not shedding as well as she used to. She’s always blown her coat 2x/year, but now I think it doesn’t fix itself as well as it used too. She has never ever had any health problems except garbage gu.

I am furminating once a week (when I used to do it every like 3 months). She’s never required much grooming- when you suggest more than 1x/week grooming (ideally) remember it is dark when I leave the house and dark when I come home, and I have a non-dog roommate so I have to do it outside.

I am a believing in smarkpak senior horse supplements… does anyone have senior dog supplement suggestions for me? My 22 y/o TB coat vastly improved with supplements- is there any dog supplemts that might do the same thing?

I’d get some bloodwork–this might be indicative of bigger problem.

If all is well, fish oil might aid. What are you feeding now?

Bloodwork including a thyroid panel at your veterinarian and fish oil my 70lb pit mix 2-3 standard adult capsules once a day. Everyone comments on how nice her coat is.

I agree with the bloodwork, could be an issue that isn’t visible! If it is just coat issues then I would go with Grand Meadows Grand Coat and Grand Meadows Grand Vitality. Those both give my setters unreal coats and skin! I swear by the stuff!

Also organic flax oil in the food each day is a good supplement. cheap at Trader Joes!

After you’ve ruled out anything medical, eggs and coconut oil are also good options to try for itchy skin and shedding.

Have you tried to use some medicated anti-itch spray to control the itch?

Now that the heat is on, is it really dry in your house? Not a reason for the shedding, but maybe the itching. I also vote for fish oil or flaxseed, whichever she will eat (mine hates fish oil and won’t lick the flaxseed out of the dish unless its liberally mixed with canned food). Overall at our house, switching to fancy expensive dog and cat food cut down on the shedding tremendously. And I, too, have to brush my old dog a lot more than I used to. Must have something to do with aging…
