Senior dog with urinary incontinence

We have a senior female Boxer who has had urinary incontinencefor years. Originally only after long car rides or when very stressed, but has slowly become more consistent over the years. Vet said it was a result of her spay surgery, put her on Proin, and it has been managed ever since (with a few exceptions). She is never aware it is happening until she’s done and the she jumps up from laying down and slinks away as if she is embarrassed.

Fast forward to this week. She has had several episodes of large “leaks.” Still not aware it is happening, but instead of small amounts she is emptying her bladder. We understand she can’t hold it as long and is taken out frequently throughout the day and my husband stays up later to take her out at night so she doesn’t have. long stretch overnight. Hasn’t helped, but here’s the weird thing: she only does it when she’s sleeping on the furniture. On the floor or her bed, no issues (other than tiny spots occasionally, but none this week) She is definitely not doing it on purpose.

Any ideas why? Is she just more relaxed on the furniture? We are calling the vet tomorrow, just wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

My JRT had incontinence with UTIs until she was put on estrogen 2x a week. She would leak everything in her sleep. The estrogen completely solved her bladder issues. In her case Proin was useless.

My late dog had some minor incontinence issues. When I had acupuncture done on her for other reasons, it stopped. Her kidneys were unbalanced, which makes sense; having all the meridiens treated helped her out quite a bit.

Proin works great. Get it from your vet.

Proin worked great for my old female dog. Are you using it every day? You cannot skip a day.

We give her the Proin twice a day and don’t miss a dose. She thinks it’s an after breakfast/dinner treat and she doesn’t let us skip it

Glad to know there are other options for her-the laundry increase really isn’t fun! Pony, where did you find a place that does doggy acupuncture?

DH is taking her to the vet to discuss options later today so hopefully we can find a new solution for her.

I was in the same boat a while back with my senior and the meds stopped being as effective. I ended up putting a child’s disposable bed mat (available at most grocery stores in the diaper section) on top of my dog’s bed, on her favorite spot on the sofa, etc. It was the perfect size, and can be cut easily to make it smaller. It’s not environmentally friendly, but it was a lifesaver.

Definitely talk to the vet. Our 15 year old lab has been on proin for 7 years, and has issues twice since then. The first a few years ago was an UTI and antibiotics fixed it. A couple months ago she started peeing again, and the vet doubled her dose which fixed the problem.

I’ll bet she has a UTI, just from personal experience. One dog on Proin most of her life one not. Right now I have a male dog on Proin, which is unusual, but it works for him. Otherwise he has very little control.

Definitely have her checked out for a UTI first. But if that’s not the case, I’ve had some luck with a couple of things for my Great Dane with sleep incontinence. In her case it is definitely related to how relaxed she is when she sleeps (she never has accidents away from home as she doesn’t relax enough), so I could definitely make an argument for the furniture being more comfortable :-). She is not a candidate for Proin because of severe anxiety, but I have been using a homeopathic product called Leaks No More for years - I’m not a huge believer in homeopathy, actually, but this stuff unquestionably works and if I run out she immediately starts having accidents again. In her case, chiropractic adjustments are really crucial - for some reason, her incontinence seems to be related to something getting out of alignment and pressing on a nerve, because chiropractic adjustments every three weeks resolve it completely (unfortunately it’s just not always feasible to get her there as the chiropractor is an hour away, and the local one treats her a little differently and it doesn’t work for whatever reason). That is definitely not the cause in every dog, but it may be worth trying. I’ve done acupuncture with her as well, which doesn’t seem to change the results in her particular case, but I think it’s definitely worth a try too, as I’ve known it to be effective for other dogs. I live in an area where the mineral content is really high in the water, and in a very old building on top of that. For whatever reason, she can’t handle the tap water, and would get crystals in her urine, UTIs, and increased incontinence with tap water, so she gets filtered or distilled water only. Finally, she takes Meloxicam, which was sort of the key in resolving the last bit of it because it’s an anti-inflammatory. For her, it seems to take a perfect balance of all of those things being in place - if one of them is not there, the accidents start up again. And while they are about 80% controlled with this routine, she still has days where they will happen again, usually because of scenarios like she has had a lot of anxiety for two days, and on the third day when she relaxes it seems the anxiety has made her overtired and she really relaxes and can’t hold her urine in her sleep.

It’s kind of a nightmare, particularly because of her size, and I have completely accepted some things - I steam clean and shampoo the rugs and couch regularly, but I intend to replace all of them when she goes, because they are definitely exposed to urine far more often than I would like. I have spent a small fortune over the years on waterproof beds, only to discover that waterproof does not mean Great Dane or frequent washing waterproof. I think I have finally found a great solution to the bedding issue (it was tested for the first time last night so we’ll see when the laundry gets started for the day :() - I bought a waterproof crib/toddler mattress on Amazon for $55, an egg crate mattress cover to go on top of it (because the toddler mattresses are a little firm for her liking, I assume because of SIDS), a waterproof mattress cover to go on top of that, and then crib sheets and a blanket, which should be easy to wash and replace. So far she loves the bed and it seems to be much more effective than the waterproof fabrics I had tried before. I also keep dry shampoo on hand for her, because although I try to put down towels and such on the days when she is having accidents, if they are bad it is impossible to keep her bed dry, and she will sleep through them, and I worry about the urine irritating her skin. Good luck, it does suck but there are some options out there!

I used my horse’s chiropractor, who also worked on dogs and cats. Try here: http://www.tcvm.com/Resources/FindaTCVMPractitioner.aspx Forgot to mention that she had adjustments as well as the acupuncture. She was also on Leaks No More, which helped as well. But after the treatments, it never came back again and she didn’t need the LNM again.

You can buy washable incontinence pads at your local pharmacy. We started with the disposables, but these ended up being cheaper in the long run. This one looks like the ones we used: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/essential-medical-quik-sorb-polyester-reusable-underpad-34-x-35-inches/ID=prod6095610-product

Pookah your girl is lucky to have you

Vet confirmed UTI so the plan is to treat that and give her an additional 72 hours to see if that clears up the issue. If not then we will try hormone therapy. I’m also going to look into the natural treatments mentioned here. I think she might like chiro, she’s got some creaky bones. I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me. If people and horses get help, makes sense dogs would too! Thanks for all the ideas, everyone.

Just wanted to add that if your dog continues to get UTIs after this one is cleared up, estrogen will be helpful in preventing them.

Tell me more about the estrogen therapy!

My dog got a half a human dose of estrogen (.3 mg Premarin) twice a week. She was 16 pounds. She never got another UTI after she was put on it.

Get her thyroid levels tested too. Hypothyroid and borderline hypothyroid can contribute to UTIs.
