Senior dog's back legs shaking

Vet appointment has been made.

About a month ago I noticed the back legs of my 9lb 13 year old Poodle shake when she is standing. She is otherwise very active, jumps like a flying squirrel, plays with my other dog normally, eats and drinks well, and had blood work done before a dental cleaning (all normal) about 7 months ago.

I just wanted to gather any possible insight from those that have also experienced this with their dogs.

What was your diagnosis, and treatment plan of action?

My 11 year old (14lb) border terrier has been doing the exact same thing for the last twelve months or so. She, too, is otherwise active and happy, despite slowing down a bit due to age. We saw the vet awhile back, and her physical and bloodwork looked fine. One of the vets in the practice has a chiropractic focus, and he came in and looked at her, too, and did a couple of adjustments in her spine. That’s the only obvious contributor to the tremor he could find, but I don’t think the adjustment made a significant difference. At the end of the day, the vets were inconclusive as to what’s going on but weren’t too concerned at this point. If your vet finds something, I’d be interested in hearing!

What a bummer they couldn’t find out what was causing the leg shakes.
I will be sure to update you after our vet visit.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

Mine had them, but he had Cushing’s and it was attributed to the muscle wasting that is part of Cushing’s disease. Plus, he was a senior citizen lab mix when they began (around 12-13).

I had a JRT with a case of the hind-end-shakes. Chiropractic work helped him too!

My 12yo Pap has that issue with his left front, which has been problematic for a couple of years.

My parent’s had an older Westie that had this for a few years - he’d had both ACLs done and we figured it was arthritis. He was also a bit of an anxious dog. We tried some acupuncture and pain meds. His hind legs would slip on the hardwood when eating so we raised his bowls and put down a mat.

I think it was weakness and pain related. He ended up having a large mass on his spleen and throughout the abdomen and was euthanized. I have no idea if it was related.

My greyhound got the leg shakes in the hind legs. It was arthritis, solved very easily with injections starting at 6 months, went down to every 3 months just before she passed away of old age after being on maintenance for ~3 years. The injections were very cheap and she never needed top-up pills which some dogs can on bad days. She was very active and playful until the end and she didn’t get the shakes again unless we got the maintenance wrong.

My dog’s hind legs shook/shake due to arthritis. It has improved with NSAIDs, pain medication and weekly massage, but still occurs on bad days.

Do you recall the type of injections she received?

Cartrophen. Probably called something different here though.

Thanks!

It is Pentosan, I just used my horse’s supply on my dog when needed.
