I have a 19 year old mare with mastitis as of Tuesday evening. She’s on regumate, and has r had a foal since 2021. It showed up the same day as we had biblical thunderstorms in Ocala, and at first I thought she was colicking, but then we noticed her udder had ballooned. Vet has been involved and we are treating (SMZs, banamine, expressing the nasty infected fluid) but my question is - how does this happen? I’m a little flabbergasted. We did a full bath on Sunday and I cleaned the smegma from her udder, so my human brain is telling me it’s my fault. Thoughts on how to keep her comfy and treat the symptoms? Could this be recurring now that it’s happened? How does a barren mare get mastitis? Pic of the mare for tax.
I also had a dry mare pop with a mastitis. It’s weird, but does happen, and it’s just one of those things. Unlikely tied to anything you did, don’t beat yourself up. It never happened again to my mare.
I hope she responds quickly to the antibiotics and feels better soon!
