September Yearling Sales 2020

I worked that sale waaaaay back when – one of the colts in our consignment that I handled a good bit was Thirty Six Red who went on to win the Wood Memorial and was second in the Belmont and one of the Breeders Cup. He stood at Claiborne or Gainesway or one of the big time studs for awhile. He wound up in NY and died after or during his second colic surgery. He was a Seattle Slew grandson by Slew 'o Gold. It was a great experience but OMG! was I tired at the end of each day!!! I got to show the Northern Dancers and other ones of smaller stature because I am so short they looked bigger. It is grueling!

Rather than send my long, link filled post into unapproved limbo by editing, I’ll just say here that the half to Bodemeister has been withdrawn. I’m sure that more horses in the links I posted will be withdrawn as well. I won’t update the outs here when they are easily seen in the catalog on Keeneland’s website.

There’s also the possibility that I am, in effect, posting this to myself.

It’s interesting to see the TB sales videos after watching STDB videos. The STDB videos are done with them loose, so you can see them trot out. Some occasionally pace.

Notable is the absence of VanMeter Sales from the list of consignors in both F.T. and Keeneland catalogs. I wonder how long the ban will continue.

Our yearling sale was yesterday. I’m heading down there today, to meet up with a friend who sold her yearlings there and deliver a pony for a ride home with her. I watched one yearling sell yesterday on the online feed, until my computer froze. But I can’t imagine that it went well. Racing is in it’s death throws here, I fear. I’m glad I’m out of it. 25 years ago, our track was on the borderline of whether it was going to continue to be an A circuit track, or become a bush track, and die. The second option was chosen. The industry is suffering badly here, and worse with covid. Such a shame, for the horses, and for the people who love racing. So many have left our area already for greener pastures.

And our Yearling Sale was September 2. 230 catalogued, I think only 142 actually sold. Will also be the last yearling sale being held on the Woodbine grounds.

I did get a decent Bayern filly for not much money. Really shouldn’t have bought anything, but trainer had checked her out and liked her, so up went the hand.

Fasig Tipton September sale which was unusual in that it included yearlings from their cancelled July and Saratoga sales.

668 cataloged with 132 outs. They sold 348. 177 not sold according to Fasig Tipton. Their numbers don’t add up but only 10ish off, they’re close enough to get the gist. Barely half sold.

Why will this be the last yearling sale at Woodbine?

Woodbine has partnered with Metrolinx, a company that runs rail based rapid transit, to put a station on the south end of the grounds where the sales pavilion and barns are. The line is already there, as it runs from Union Station to Toronto Pearson Airport.
Woodbine Entertaiment has grand plans, including a new casino, entertainment venue, a hotel… This link explains it all.

It seems to be driving the regular Keeneland handler crazy to watch the barn folks present the horses.:lol:
He’s giving them instructions on placement of the horses for the cameras.

PON colt on his toes and screaming the entire time he was in the ring, was quite a contrast to the AP colt that came after him who was cool as a cucumber.

Here’s a link to the sale, https://www.londonselectedyearlingsale.com/roster though since it’s in October, most of them don’t have videos posted yet, though Seelster Farms seems to have video’s on most. I can’t find any of the great video’s my SO has shown me recently. I wish I could find the video of the colt out of our old trotting mare. It was very impressive, we would have loved to have been able to bid on him but he was withdrawn from the sale.
