September Yearling Sales 2020

I’ve been watching while doing the minutes from my dog club’s meeting. When I see a sire I don’t recognize, I ‘google’ him, especially for the stud fee. Kinda like to see if the breeder or owner MIGHT be happy with the sale price. The Constitution colt I liked sold for $240,000—I MIGHT be able to buy a ‘part’ of him, like Authentic’s “$204 per”.

There are many reason why a horse might be withdrawn. Some that are entered never even arrive at the sales ground. Could be they have an injury–even a small one might keep a horse from showing its best. Maybe they get an abscess. Could be that when the owner took the pre-sale xrays they found an unanticipated problem that would keep the horse from bringing a good price. Or maybe the owner just changed his mind.

Even once they’ve arrived, stuff can happen. Occasionally horses colic, or get sore from being walked back and forth endlessly on the pea stone show rings. Sometimes there isn’t much interest from potential buyers so the owners decide to take the horse home rather than having the sale “put a price” on it.

Private sales, when they happen, are supposed to be handled through the sales office–and they usually take place after the horse has gone through the ring and been bought back (RNA’d)

(Horses changing hands immediately pre-sale and then being bid up by their new owners is now illegal in KY and FL.)

I go here https://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-register/
It provides a link to the farm where the stallion stands as well.

This time of year, the 2020 stud fee is not necessarily indicative of a stallion’s current worth.

Constitution is a perfect example of that. His stud fee this year was 40k. Next breeding season (2021) it will probably be 75-100k.

Once the horse is at the sale, is there a penalty for withdrawing it other than for veterinary reasons?

Yes. You have to pay the sales company their fee (5%) on the average price of the horses sold on the day your horse was supposed to sell. (So people who are well connected make sure they have a vet handy who will write them an excuse.)

Thanks, LaurieB and Skydy, for clearing things up/educating me.

Once again, such beautifully turned out yearlings. Nice thatCOVID hasn’t changed that.

This must be the next to the last crop for Pioneerof the Nile. He died in March of 2019.
I wonder how many mares he bred in '19.

Apparently I like More Than Ready’s get more than the people in the racing business do.

Gorgeous Curlin filly, half to Honor AP hammer price 1.4 Million.

If this sales entries are anything to go by, American Pharoah is still passing his laid back disposition down to his get.

@sprite You do know that you can watch the sale online, don’t you?

The Keeneland September Sale begins on Sunday the 13th at 12pm Eastern time. If you go here;https://www.keeneland.com/sales on the day, it will say “Watch the sale live” (or something similar) and if you click on that you’ll be watching! There is no charge to watch the sale.

Here are the days that the different hip #s sell https://www.keeneland.com/sites/defa…HipSummary.pdf

The horses in Book 1 have the fanciest pedigrees and conformation/looks. The Arrogate filly that you like is hip #2 in the first session of Book 1. As you can see here http://flex.keeneland.com/saleindex/saleindex.html , the order in which they sell within their Book is determined alphabetically by their Dam’s name.

The horses in the lower books can be just as successful at the races as the horses in the higher books (and some will be just as expensive too.)

You’re welcome. @LaurieB Breeds her mares, races their offspring and sometimes sells one or two at the sales. It’s always fun to watch when she has one in the sale so we can see it and root for a good price for her.

I watch the sales online and am not in the business. I’ve worked for small private TB breeders in the past and enjoy keeping up with breeding and bloodlines.

LaurieB is more knowledgeable than I am about racing and the particulars of the sales and has been kind enough (for years now) to answer my questions as well.
