Sergio Grasso vs Ego 7

Hello all. My Tredstep boots have been repaired more times than I can count, so I’m looking to buy a new pair of boots. I have a few pair of schooling boots - Ariats and Tuff Riders, but want a nice pair of boots that I can show in and that last. My Tredsteps are about five years old and I’d love to get another pair that lasts that long. Currently a 9.5 full/tall in Ariat sizing or a 41 reg/tall in tredstep.

I really liked the look of the Sergio Grasso boots and also the Ego 7s. Just don’t know which way to go. I want a pair of quality boots that is comfortable and long lasting.

Any models I should stay away from? Ones that you all like? How are the sizing on them? Do they run true to size? Sorry for the questions. I’ve looked through the other threads on both boots and looked over reviews, but I’m still not quite decided. Thank you!

I have Sergio’s as my show boots and they’ve survived (ETA, almost 15) years! Granted, that’s 1 horse, maybe 2, and I don’t wear them in the wash rack or walking around. When my lesson boots died I was riding 2-3 times a week in my Sergio’s for a year and they have held up. Again I only wear them for the ride and keep them in my house mostly.

Ego7 was THE boot at the shows for a while. I think the synthetic calf is weird personally, but I don’t do super soft calfskin either. A full grain boot that’ll last is my choice.

I have paddock boots and chaps that I abuse a bit, and honestly I bathe and do handwalks and chores in hiking boots or Bogs. Having home boots and show boots will allow you to keep the expensive ones around longer.

ETA my Sergio’s are semi-custom. I got the measurements done and ordered the boots at a local tack shop. Therefore I don’t have a ton of input as to fit - my order came in perfectly and still fit well to this day.

I like my Ego7s a lot, but they barely dropped at all after a year of daily use. They hold up well in terms of the leather quality but I have had a lot of issues with other parts breaking (snaps on each boots, the little leather tab that holds the zipper in place, for example). I would buy them again as a schooling boot. If you’re considering Sergios and you’re already near the $1k price point, I would personally look at Tuccis. I’ve had mine for 3 years now and still look amazing. They were my daily wear boot for the first year, and now are a show-only boot but have held up amazingly well.

I really like the Ego7s and they are the best fitting “off the shelf” boot for me. I have found some size variation, once I got a bit burned when I ordered a back up pair to have in my trailer of the exact same size and I let them sit assuming they’d fit…and they didn’t. Sold those and re-ordered the same size and it was perfect, so just try on what you buy immediately.

I’ve also had snaps and the spur rests break on the Ego7 but I am fairly abusive to my schooling boots! I wear Romitelli boots now and they wear like iron, same price too. I do still wear and recommend the Ego7 to folks looking at a tack shop. They are good boots that fit well.

I actually live in Europe, so the Serigos I’m looking at are around 400 to 800 euros depending on model. The Ego 7 are around 375 to 600 Euros. I appreciate the suggestion on the DeNiro boots and I’m checking them out now.

@Rel6 I will look at the Tuccis too, did not think about them. I honestly have been scraping by on decent boots through sales and now that I have some spending money set aside, I think a pair of quality boots is in order. Thank you for your experience with the Ego7s not dropping, because I really want the boots to stay tall enough for me and most drop and end up too short. The quality issues though make me worry a bit, so I think I will take your suggestion on that and spend a touch more.

@fivestrideline Thank you, I did not realize that they were super soft and for me, I’m not rough on boots, but I also don’t want to have them wear out too quickly. I do the same as you and take off my boots when I get off to try and keep them alive for longer. They are cleaned and stored with their trees and bag. I may go in somewhere and see if they can do the fitting and at least make sure the measurements are good so that I can get the right size off the bat.

@SeeSpotEvent that is really good to know about the sizing and they don’t cross for all styles. I have not heard of Romitelli boots, so I will check those out too. I think from all these responses, I may need to go try on everything and see what works the best for me. There is an awesome tack shop about an hour from me so, I think I may head there and check some of the brands out.

Thank you all for your input, this has brought up a lot of things that I did not consider. I am really glad that I came to COTH to ask. I hope I did not mess this reply system up and I will keep you all updated on what I go with

For all interested, I went with the Sergios. I got the Evolution model, which I think is there lowest level model. I followed the measuring video online and was between sizes so I sized up and they fit absolutely perfectly out of the box. My only regret is that I didn’t go with the brown leather ones.

My reason for choosing this model was the price (339 euros) and I didn’t have a local tack place near me that stocked the Sergios so, I had to blind order online. I wasn’t quite brave enough to go with a 700€ boot to return and go through all the hassle with.

Also I got a free Passier bridle with the boots which did make me pull the trigger. They got here in less than three days after I ordered and I am so excited to ride in them. They are some of the only boots that when I ordered the tall, they were actually tall enough.

I will say that a couple of the DeNiro boots spoke to me as well, but I was looking at a wait to order. I think I may splurge for a pair of the semi customs in the future as I played with the configuration stuff. So many cool options. The Tuccis weee stunning but they were a bit above what I was comfortable trying to spend on a blind order. I need to find a tack shop to try these on and I’m in the boonies, so not a whole lot of good stores close by.

Thank you all for your help and I’m really happy with my new boots!!

Please tell us where you got the boots and free bridle

I’m not sure what you mean about a free bridle!

Sorry my phone went feral. I was trying to reply to @FLeventer

I had the eg07. Personally, after breaking them in- I do not like them. They fit my calf weird, the zipper suck and just the fit of the boot leather. Do not recommend.

For about the same price, I love the Deniro Tricolor boots. Fit is better, leather is better and the look is beautiful. And they have held up to the daily beating of a working boot- not just competing boot

Fundis had a freebie sale, so if you spent over 350€ you got to pick from their list of free items, one of which was a Passier bridle. They had other options for less money spent too which was really cool.

So the Tricolor had so many cool options that I could add or just the base boot, which came in three colors: blue, black, and brown. They also had a smooth leather option or one that looked almost textured? I was playing with the custom options that you can add on to them on the site. I really like the look of them but they had a 3 to 6 week delivery time. They were a very close second.
