Seriously old dog....anyone have experience with doggie diapers?

Our little Doxie is in his late teens and is pretty much incontinent. We have worked out a decent system during the day but at night, he pees himself without getting up and is laying in it in the morning. Has anyone tried doggie diapers for overnight? Any other suggestions I’m not thinking of? He seems to sleep so soundly, he doesn’t even realize he’s in wet until he gets up when I come down the steps in early morning.

I have never used doggie diapers, but I have a dog that took a looooong time to potty train after bringing home from the shelter who would mess in his crate over night. I found with him, if I put a lot…and I mean a LOT…of bedding (blankets/etc) in his crate, it would absorb most of the urine so he wasnt laying in it all night. I worked at a hotel at the time, and they would give away any linens with stains they couldnt get out. That is what I used for his crate, because even a crate full of nasty was only one load in the washing machine, and if they got to nasty I could throw them away. If there are any local hotels you could stop by, that is very common practice to give away stained linens.

Hope that helps some! Good luck with your little old man!

I used doggie diapers on my Gordon. It was a wrap for males and they sold pads with them. I never used the pads but used cloth diapers, which absorbed his pee far better than the thin pads would have.

I must say I was surprised they worked really well. They did get soaked but they never transferred the wetness to the carpet or dog bed. I had to buy two and kept swapping them out. They had velcro to hold in place and the velcro never worn down through infinite number of washings. I bought them at Petco. This was quite a few years ago.

Is he in his crate at night or just lying on his bed? I would not use the wraps at night because of the possibility of scald from the urine. I would find some absorbent bedding like the pads they use in nursing homes that would wick away the moisture. Get several and swap them out.

No crate, he is closed in the kitchen with his blanket. To be honest, I’m having trouble keeping up with laundry and its hell on my old wood floors. Right now, most of his body gets wet from the urine, so I was hoping to contain it to his bottom and just have to clean that in the morning rather than the whole dog.

I thought about child cloth diapers, too. Good to know!

We used doggie diapers on our aged wheaten who grew increasingly incontinent as he aged and they worked great. He was in them overnight and whenever we were away from the house. The male “wraps” are the easiest - we had several so we could just change them out and wash them as needed. Best inserts we found were the human incontinence pads (buy the female specific ones, as they have the heaviest protection in the middle); for a smaller dog, you might get away with heavy-duty maxipads. They stick right into the wrap and then the whole thing velcros around the dog’s parts and fastens on his lower back.

Seriously - try them. It was a huge stress reliever for us not to have him lying in his own urine when he leaked and/or having him beat-up the wood floors.

I used doggy diapers on my dog when she came in heat before her spay. She hated it. They were cute and amused me, but she wouldn’t move, wouldn’t eat, and wouldn’t drink with them on. She would just lay down. If I asked her to come. She would come, hunched over, and then lay at my feet.

I felt bad for her, but she got kind of used to them after a while. She did start to tear them off, though. So I just gave up and kept her outside most of the time until the heat wore off. Then I got her spayed. In your case, I would at least try it!

This is my concern, too, especially after reading the part I bolded.

If this continues (his skin being wet from urine), you could quickly be looking at secondary issues requiring vet intervention.

Since my little old man Dachshund Concoction was on Pred last month, he is urinating a ton. We stopped Pred for mental reasons. Inconveniently, the middle-of-the-night peeing continues. My solution is to set an alarm for the middle of my sleeping hours and take him outside. If I want to sleep a little longer, I set two alarms.

It was lose sleep, crate him and create a urine scald situation, or unpredictably wake bolt upright in a panic at the sound of whizzing on carpet . I’m exhausted but it’s working.

I used a belly band with VERY THICK and absorbant liners (the Tena overnight ones) for my old man JRT (15+) who sometimes wet the bed and the last year of his life seriously did not give an F where he lifted his leg anymore. He wore it overnight and for a few hours during the day when he was hanging out with me in carpeted rooms. (I miss the little fuzz bucket- he was an adorable and sweet old guy, despite being a PITA).
Anyway, those liners absorbed the urine well enough that he was dry even after wearing it for hours. and I used a soft neoprene belly band. He did fine.

I have an Eskimo Spitz that is about 30 pounds. He is not the most housebroken critter. We use a bell band with the overnight long feminine pads. He will occasionally get the band itself so it gets washed. I should just get a couple of more so I can always have a back up available. The pads do a good job of keeping him dry and keeping things contained.

They sell beds for this. Lightly meshed suspended bed, think hammock, urine flows down to tray underneath.

I have never tried these, but Simple Solution has a washable doggie diaper. They come in 3 sizes.

I used human (baby) disposable diapers for my dog before I found out he had Cushings. I wrapped them around him–by his waist I could attach the tape to the diaper, by his belly I made a short strap with grippers on either end (the kind that hold mittens to a kid’s coat) to bridge the gap.

i would first make sure it’s not a UTI or other condition that is treatable, then use the belly bands. you can put women’s large size pads in them, or use a washable diaper as long as it’s not soaking wet on him all day long.
