Wow!!! That’s amazing. She looks great— fingers crossed this new feeding protocol works long term. And well done to you to keep looking for an answer and being your horse’s best advocate.
What an amazing turnaround! 20 yrs ago people sneared at the concept of leaky gut. That is one good vet!
If this works for Willow, I’m going to document the timeline, the tried treatments, drugs, failures, successes etc. I haven’t been able to find another case like this online yet. I hope it helps someone somewhere.
Thank you for that (happy) and informative update. And what a relief it must be to stop the steroids. I’ve never heard of leaky gut causing these symptoms; fascinating and so helpful.
That’s quite a turnaround.
I knew one horse who got hives that bad, and then it got worse and his airway was closing up. The vet came and pumped steroids into him, and said, “get him out of this barn. Now.” (There was nothing wrong with the barn; the vet was just acting on a hunch.) The owner called around and found someone a few miles away who had an open stall. Horse was moved within hours, and immediately got better. The owner tried to bring him back to the first barn a couple of times, with not-good results, and eventually the horse started getting allergy symptoms at the second barn. One of the other vets in the practice offered to take him as he’d also had a terrible reaction at a show or two. She hung onto him for a while; he did fine at the vets’ clinic as long as he was on 24/7 turnout. Eventually he was sold to a family who had no desire to compete or anything, and he became a good kids’ horse for them.
It’s good to see your horse without hives. What a relief, for both you and your horse.
