Ok, I will talk to the vet when I email him tonight. Thanks
So last night when we went to the barn, little one was extremely sore on her other leg (the non-injured one)⦠Is this normal? We are about 24 days in and started photonic light therapy on Monday. If she is still ginger on that good leg, weāll have vet out again⦠I know she had some trouble getting up, and we had to work on her mats last night⦠She is weight bearing on the other legā¦We are hoping that she just strained her other leg a little bit, but just looking for past experience?
Thankfully her leg was fine today⦠Her leg is looking really good today (been using red light therapy)⦠The difference from 2 days ago is pretty big I thinkā¦

and drum roll please⦠She moved her foot this way and that and⦠ZERO Buckling!!!
sorry for all the posts
This is quite interesting how in most cases it healed right up ⦠my mare severed her left hind tendon when younger in a fence before I had her, and not sure what my grandparents did after the injury but it never completely healed. She has a bit of a funny walk and picks up that foot pretty high. No signs of pain or anything, doesnāt even hold her back from a good canter at age 30! She does occasionally stomp it down though pretty hard after picking it up but after walking over poles and such it lessens. She used to have corrective extended shoes in both back feet and was shod all the way around but we pulled the shoes for the winter. Has anyone else seen it helps with corrective shoes?
Good luck to your horse on it recovery too. Tendon stuff is tricky!
Excellent update Patti! Some of the lack of buckling may be due to her having finally figured out how to āthrowā the leg around to get the foot to land flat enough; sheās still at risk for buckling, so Iād keep supporting the joint when her wrap is off. One consequence of my guy having knuckled over at some point (I never saw it, so who knows when it happened) was the tearing of the fetlock joint capsule, which resulted in a lot of swelling at the joint. We saw on an xray where the capsule pulled away from the bone, saw some calcium buildup there from that (injury in April, this xray was Sept or so to try to determine why the joint was swollen), and later saw that go away (xray in Jan).
Five - the heel extensions sound more like for an injury to the tendons in the back of the leg? For this particular issue the more likely scenario would be a toe extension to prevent the foot from tipping forward. But yes, for back-of-limb tendons, heel extensions are not uncommon.
JB⦠Most definitely protecting that foot during redress Weāve learned that when doing the ouchy stuff, we pick up the good leg off the ground just enough to where she canāt move the bad leg⦠of course giving her breaks here and there to rest⦠and when my daughter is cleaning the wound, she just picks up the ouchy leg and holds it. Once the bandages are back on,she stands pretty good for the wraps. We are almost pros now LOL. By the end of this, weāll be experts.
HELP!! We have a call into the vet already but what the hell is going on now???
Sorryā¦Iām freaking out⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wae4BttzuBc&feature=youtu.be
This is the 2nd time sheās done this in a week⦠She always walks it out and is fine afterward, but what is causing this??? We had to really help her to get up yesterday⦠Seems to always happen the day after we redress her⦠Ideas PLEASE? Vet better call soon!
Looks like pain. Iād also be watching out for laminitis of the good limb and checking the digital pulse of the left hind twice a day.
She looks really sore I also donāt think youāre wrap is low and snug enough - looks like her fetlock can flex quite easily.
Glad youāve contacted the vet.
She canāt move her fetlock except a little bit of bend like it should⦠Vet said her wrap looks good⦠He wants us to increase her hand walking a little bit, and work on getting her paddock shored up so we can let her out of her stall in a small area now⦠He thinks it has to do with her growing, if sheās not better by Monday, we are going to have him come do xrays. Keep the prayers coming. I donāt know if IāM going to survive this
So we did go ahead and resplinted her⦠and now she has a new hot fence small pen outside her stall for during the day. Of course we work hard to do that and the rain starts again⦠Ugh! Sheās still really sore in what was her good leg⦠Iām praying sheāll get better from that⦠She has sooo much trouble getting up, its breaking my heart.

I think this is a great next step. Getting her some extra free choice movement will help a lot.
I sure hope so cause Iām about ready to cry⦠Sheās depressed, Iām depressed, Had our barn owner take a torch to her splint so we could shape it more naturally to her leg⦠Iām more worried now about that other leg as she is sooo sore, she wonāt get up once she lays down⦠Vet said if its not better by Monday, weāll have to do xrays.
Finally talked directly to him instead of his assistant⦠So here is what he said⦠It could have been a pulled muscle due to her difficulty getting up⦠He wasnāt real thrilled we resplinted her, but he understood⦠He is concerned it could be epiphysitis or something like that⦠he said her hoof was cool, no tenderness⦠he thinks it is in her hock. probably xrays on Monday⦠She does get the entire day with her little turnout area which is good, Iām just hoping its a pulled muscle and not epyphisitis⦠How are we supposed to control that? Its not like we can work her or throw her out to pasture⦠I just want to scream, Iām sooo frustrated.

Latest pics of her wound on the bottom of this album⦠Looking pretty good I thinkā¦Vet says he sees some proud flesh, but I canāt tell where he is talking about. Sheās still pretty sore in the good leg⦠Felt heat in her hock.
It does look better

shows the proud flesh best. See the āCā shape of the bubbly redder looking tissue? I think if you look at that, from the front, youāll see itās above the level thatās just below the skin. Thatās all proud flesh is - normal granulation tissue that is necessary for wound healing, thatās just not stopped growing at its proper place. It bleeds like nobodyās business, because all that stuff is, is basically a mass of capillaries. But, because thatās all it is, there arenāt any nerve endings either, so scrubbing it doesnāt hurt.
Thank you JB⦠I canāt tell you how much I appreciate your input We will take care of that on the next rewrap

While my little one is still very sore in the good leg, her attitude was much happier today Iām so glad she can go outside again, even though its raining kittens and poodles today, she was much happier
That makes ME happier!

Updated Pic⦠Injury is 1 month old today. Used the Entederm on the proud flesh tonightā¦
That looks good!! I donāt have Rioās injury pictures online anymore, but I wish I did to show you what his looked like at about that same stage. Still ugly looking for those who havenāt seen wounds like this, and especially without seeing the comparison to the fresh wound, but the tell-tale signs if healing are all there. You will start to see improvement much more quickly now, assuming the proud flesh doesnāt get out of hand (and it might, just be prepared, sometimes that stuff can go all nuts on you almost overnight). Yay!
