Severed Extensor Tendon

It is definitely getting more fleshy, but the wound has grown since some of the skin around the wound has sloughed off. Is that normal? The ABD pad almost isn’t big enough now

Vet is coming out on Friday to check things out, and to do xray’s on her good leg. She is doing better, but still sore in that good leg.

So… a happy post today… I think I told you she has been really gimpy on her good leg… Well today she was definitely feeling better…

… Vet came out today… Did xray’s on the little one… Physitis :frowning: She’s just growing too danged fast , gotta work on a diet change… Good news on the wound… The flesh coverage is doing way better than he expected, he’s seeing new blood flow on the bone that he didn’t think would happen

We bought the Sore No More clay poultice today and will start putting that on her sore legs. Vet also recommended DMSO gel… Thoughts on that?

Sorry to hear, poor little one. :frowning:

I haven’t read all the posts, so apologies if this is already being done or has already been suggested - are you supplementing her with MSM? There is a lot of info out there about MSM doing wonders for young horses with physitis.

Best of luck, you are a very dedicated and caring owner.

Yes, MSM, joint supplement, Smart-Tendon, Thia-Cal to help keep her quiet and aid her digestion (10 month old baby with bad injury = trouble on 4 legs) Alfalfa to aid her tummy w/ all the meds (Sulfa and bute)…Free choice local hay, Orchard grass, Haystack Natural Grain (low carb, low sugar)+ beet pulp mash horse guard multivitamin…

Is it bad that the first thing I thought about when I woke up (way too early) was your little girl?

Physitis - we can fix that!!

MSM stat. Yes.

Physitis is typically a mineral imbalance moreso than growing too fast (which often causes “contracted tendons”), though can result from an overweight foal whose joints are not able to handle that weight.

Is this the feed? Is this what she’s been on?
http://www.haystackfarmandfeeds.com/horse-products/low-carblow-fat-horse-feed/

If so, it’s basically hay with a little fat fortification. Not a bad product, but that and a v/m isn’t something I’d have a young foal on.

What else can you get? If you can get Triple Crown Growth I would do that. If the recommended amount to feed is too many calories, then use the 30% ration balancer. If that’s not quite enough calories (and you’d be feeding probably 2lb, maybe 3) then you could add a pound or 2 of alfalfa pellets.

I think that would give you a FAR better mineral profile than what you have now.

Long-time lurker, seldom poster here. But I have to say that I am so thankful that this thread popped up, and so many people have shared their stories.

Three days ago my mare (bought not even 2 weeks ago) suffered a freak accident while leading her out to the field. She reared up fell backwards and left into/half way over the fence corner. Got her left hind stuck, panicked, pulled out and degloved her left hind down to the bone. The extensor tendon is severed, plus the injury wraps most of the way around her leg. It was the most horrific thing I’ve ever seen. She’s at the hospital now, given a decent prognosis if everything goes well, but the concern now is possible loss of circulation to the foot. The skin below the fetlock is now cold, but the vets are unsure if this is from total circulation loss or just loss to the skin. They have her comfortable, her attitude couldn’t be better throughout this whole ordeal, and she’s now bearing weight on the leg with the extensive wrapping and splint they are using. It’ll be another few days until we know if the foot has lost circulation, if not well… :frowning:

I’m just going to keep hoping and praying for good news. Seeing this thread pop up today on my “lurking while pretending to pay attention in class” seems like a very interesting sign from someone…

PattiP35 - Jingles for your mare too!

Oh Lucy I’m so sorry! Many many jingles that the circulation is good!

Lucy, So sorry this happened to you… We are currently dealing with the same issue, though thankfully our little Nova did not completely deglove, but she did sever both Extensor tendons. The best thing I can offer to you is PATIENCE! and read through this all you want as I’ve been posting like a mad woman. and JB Rocks!

JB… she is on this grain… http://www.haystackfarmandfeeds.com/horse-products/special-blend-pellets/

She is also on:

Alfalfa day and night (1 flake day/night)
Orchard Mix (day/night, high quality green)
Free Choice Local

2lb day of haystack special blend pellets
2 lb wet Beet Pulp Mash

Supplements:

HorseGuard vitamin/mineral supp. 1 oz per day
Smart Tendon 1/2 dose
Cortaflex w/HA 1/2 dose
Probiotics (ProBalance) 1/2 dose
ThiaCal (Calming Supplement w/ B1 & Magnesium) I have label info if I can figure out how to attach those we just sent this same info to the vet,

I seriously think she has grown like 1hh+ in the last month… In February right before her injury, her butt was just at my daughter’s chest (my daughter is 5.8"), she is now past her collar bone. and my daughter was worried about this injury stunting her growth LOL

Yes that’s what I thought she was on. I stand by my recommendation, or something similar

Day 34 Nova’s injury - Getting better every time… Lots more tissue coverage, and she hasn’t buckled in over 10 days  Still sore because of the physitis, but happy with how its going…Keep the prayers coming for our little girl.We are slowly changing her diet to accommodate for the physitis, still waiting for word from the vet on what he wants us to do.

Alot of people keep suggesting DiCal supplement… But my vet seems to shy away from it every time we ask, we never get a straight answer… Is it too much calcium w/ the alfalfa+Thia Cal supplement? I just want to take away her ouchies… She was doing fine before the injury. Frustrated, and still waiting for vet to get back to me.

Also… he told us to get some aloe vera vitamin a,d and e cream… What do you suggest as for brands?

 Update on my mare…Monday got the worst call of my life, she had become very uncomfortable overnight and it became apparent that the circulation to her hoof was lost. We put her to rest that afternoon. One of the hardest things I have ever done, but I am trying to be at peace with the fact that I gave her every chance to pull through and she is no longer suffering.

Give your horses a big hug for me, life is too short.

Oh Lucy that is awful, I am so, so sorry :’( :’(

Lucy I am so sorry, my heart is with you! We have been very lucky with our little Nova, and you have reminded me of that. Prayers and healing thoughts for you.

https://www.facebook.com/krazyhorsemom/posts/10203448496087308?pnref=story Today was a good day… Just a little bit of bone left to cover, about the size of a quarter…Still no buckling, and she seemed pretty comfortable… Still doing the red light therapy… Trying to figure out how to give a lighter splint…I would take it away all together if I had a little more trust in that “good” leg behaving itself, but she was moving around in the stall with just the heavy wrap today and doing quite well ? Keep praying for healing !

Lucy, HHHUUUGGGSSS…
