Shah moving horses from Baffert

Happy new year, all.

Just a bit of racing news to get the year started – owner Kaleem Shah is moving his horses out of Baffert’s barn. New trainers: Art Sherman and Doug O’Neill.

Yay for horses going to Art Sherman

It appeared to me from the Bloodhorse article that this move wasn’t the Shah’s idea…

Wonder what the story behind the story is…

hmm…what makes you say that?

Good news for Sherman, any way. And isn’t Dorty a big horse? At least he’ll have Chrome’s double stall available pretty soon.

“In 2016, Shah’s horses made 74 starts, with 19 wins, 19 seconds and nine thirds, for earnings of $1,803,081, ranking him 41st by North American earnings.”

A win % over 25% and in the money % over 63.5 % - I don’t think I’d be complaining.

Take Control is an interesting story. RNA as a yearling at $7.7 million, then sold as a 2 yo for $1.9 million.

A surprising move, especially if it was Baffert’s decision.

From the first Bloodhorse article

I wish Bob the very best," Shah said. "It’s a bittersweet moment for me and not what I wanted to do. It was my hope that I would race horses with Bob as long as I raced horses, but it was not meant to be

Sounds like overall, not a huge number of horses… 6 to Art Sherman and 7 to Doug O’Neill. Yes, Dortmund will end up in CC’s stall  Couldn’t tell from the BH article where the O’Neill horses will be going (location wise).

Definitely baffling.

Another feather in Art Sherman’s cap. I would love it if someone would make a movie about his life. What an interesting time he has had of it these past few years.

I think Dortmund will do very well in Art Shermans barn. Thing he’s gotten a little lost in Bob’s barn with so many other big runners in his game.

It is odd but my guess is there was a falling out of some sorts either over money or business relations.

Wish all the horses well.

It’s interesting to see Art is thinking about taking Klimt the Dubai route. It looks like going there the last two years have sucked him in. I hope Dortmund heads over as well if Klimt does.

Either that or he’s gotten really good about going along with an owner’s wishes–perhaps Martin trained him well, LOL. Although I also think that Dubai opened up a whole new world for him.

I think he might have fun with Dortmund.

Saw this the other day.
I think (for Dorty) is a good move. Glad to see Art getting some more good horses.

And another move… Kaleem Shah moving 6 horses from Doug O’Neill to Simon Callaghan.

Sounds like the 6 were the only ones O’Neill had.

Anyone with any insight as to why one would move 6 horses from Baffert to O’Neill (neither really shabby trainers IMO) and then 4 months later move the six to Callaghan (another not shabby trainer IMO)??

Probably because hes not getting the wins he thinks he deserves or he isn’t getting the attention he thinks he deserves. Unfortunately, a horse only has so much talent and no matter whos barn its in; you can turn a claimer into a GI winner.

Any idea if any of these moves are mutually agreed upon? Or the trainer bowing out of a difficult relationship with an owner?

Can or cannot? If a trainer can make a claimer a graded stakes winner-- then they surely are uber-talented-- and owners would be mad to leave them.

Charismatic ran for a tag.
