Shampoo for carpet cleaner to get pee smell out of rug...

Long story short, pretty sure my cattle dog has peed more than once on the living room braided rug, and it has dried because we weren’t aware of it at the time. We both wear slippers or sandals around the house, so never would’ve noticed a damp spot.

I am thinking because I have noticed a weird smell in the (very small) house over the past few weeks, but thought it was from having the house shut up with the AC running. Stale air and all that. But, now that the windows have been opened for two weeks now, and the house STILL smells, and discovering the pee on the floor this morning, which confirmed the smell over the past few weeks is disgustingly similar, I am pretty certain he has peed and its dried before we noticed it.

So, any suggestions for a shampoo that is compatible with a carpet cleaner that works well for removing and deep cleaning this braided rug?

Under the rug is wood floor, so my plan is to shampoo rug, then bring it outside to hang dry, and then mop the hardwood underneath it.

If that doesn’t work, we’re ditching the rug.

Thoughts?

Oh, and the doggie is on crate lockdown now whenever we are at work or sleeping. Back to housetraining, square one. He was never an easy dog to housebreak to begin with.

I’d try some nature’s miracle on it if it’s too large to fit in the washer. You might also consider taking it to the cleaners or throwing it over the fence to hose it. I don’t think many regular carpet cleaners can do that great of a job on a braided rug. I know mine wouldn’t do a good job.

But I like that Nature’s Miracle.

Way too big for a washer, its like an 8’ by 10’ rug  And I would think taking a rug that size to the cleaner would be pretty darned expensive.

Hang it on the line or on a fence and set a sprinkler up on it all day.

The more water the better; I think if you can rinse it very well any soap will help.

What’s the best way to really scrub it with soap? Maybe use the carpet cleaner to apply the soap, then I can scrub it in with a brush, bring it outside to hang it and rinse it?

Nature’s Miracle really does work - but you need to use a lot of it, make it pretty wet. If you can take it outside, rinse really well, soak in lots of NM and
let it sun dry. It is worth not being chintzy with it. (We had a ghastly dog accident…)

Unless it’s got a foam or no slip backing, you’ll want to apply your washing methods to both sides.

Carpet cleaner both sides (Nature’s Miracle should have the ratios of how much to add in addition to the carpet shampoo on the side of the container), carpet cleaner both sides again with just water, then hang the thing outside, exposing the top and the bottom to sunlight till it’s dry.
