How do YOU apply it ? It says not to use a sprayer and I need to put it on his armpits so I can’t pour it on. Use a washcloth ? or just gloves ?
Either will work. Use it sparingly.
It blistered my mare’s armpits so badly they took weeks to heal. I realize that’s a known issue with MTG, but I"d used it on that horse before without a problem. I think the extra heat/sweat in the armpit area probably contributed to how bad her reaction was.
To use MTG just shake the bottle really well and apply just a little bit with your hands or use gloves. I’ve used MTG for close to 40 years without any problems or reactions on dozens of horses. I guess some can be sensitive to sulpher so do a patch test first. Also since it is oil based don’t put some on and turn out in direct sun until absorbed. I always use it in the evening and by morning it’s fine for turnout. A little bit goes a LONG way so use sparingly. I swear by it for everything from clearing up scratches and rainrot to growing hair and making tails thick and long. It’s amazing stuff but smelly.
I switched from MTG to Equiderma which not only is working better at clearning up rainrot and scratches on my horses, but it also smells good, I can touch it without gloves, and it prevents those issues from coming back with periodic use. You can google the equiderma website and read about the lotion and why it works so well.
That stuff stinks! Use other products which are more effective and do not stink.

I quit using it when it caused horrible burn on a tail. I’d find something else.
Listerine works great for rain rot and scratches. At least it did for our pony when we got back from vacation to find him covered in it.
We use it as a preventive now and have had no recurrences.
I stopped using MTG. For armpit scurf, I use Lucky Braids Handy Salve or Equiderma.
Well, so far it seems to be working ok. I’m using it on a skin condition caused by gnats. Yes it is smelly, but not as bad as I heard. I bought the one that has herbs ? added I guess to keep the smell down. It works great to detangle their manes/tails.
If it doesn’t work out, I’ll look for the Equiderma. I have used it years ago, and I remember it was a great product.

That’s a condition called “sweet itch.” You might want to read up on as it is actually an allergy to the saliva of the biting midge. There are treatments other than topical available that you can look into if it is significant problem.
