Sheath Bug Bites and $$$Equishield IBH Salve - Can I Make My Own w/ Over-the-counter Cortisone?

Hi Guys,
My vet suggested Equishield IBH for my gelding’s sheath instead of swat. It has .5% cortisone as anti-inflammatory for bug bites. Buts its too pricey to use everyday. (So is swat…). You can buy 10% cortisone cream over the counter. Wouldn’t that be better than using a salve with .5% ?

I have never heard of this product. I hope others that may have used it check in. I have a mare who gets very raw from bug bits and anything that would help would be great. (I currently use Swat also because everything else I have tried does not do anything.)

Yeah, you could totally whip that up. Here are the ingredients:

Chlorhexidine ointment can be had for twenty bucks a pound:

Or valley vet carries the Equishield stuff (4% chg) for just a little more:

Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic, it’s in hemorrhoid creams/sprays or Neosporin with pain relief.

Citronella can be had as oil, or in swat.

And you’ve already worked through the steroid.

The non active ingredients are also easily obtainable.

IBH salve works great for my mare who is reactive to tick and other bug bites. It’s also a bit stickier/gummier than swat so I find it stays on better. It works the best of the large drawer of various ointments I’ve tried.

No experience making my own, but I’d consider trying it. I like the combo of antiseptic/anti itch/lowering swelling/repelling more bugs.

ETA correct name of product vs just “IBH” which is the actual issue not solution.
