This is the “rescue” that ate the testicles of the horses they had gelded and bragged about it.
This is the “rescue” that shoots horses (euthanasia) and boasts about it.
This is the “rescue” that loves attention and feels that crude language is attracting supporters.
HiCaliber has done things I don’t agree with, but this just comes off as petty and obsessive IMHO.
While the first part about eating testicles seems odd to me, this is clearly a thing for many people. I mean, rocky mountain oysters have a name for a reason!
Secondly, I prefer that my horses be euthanized with a gun and a good marksman. My aged gelding was put down by my husband earlier this year. It was hard on my husband and I, but my gelding was dead before he hit the ground. Definitely not a bad way to go.
Other than that, this type of rescue is exactly why I’d prefer to go to an auction and take a gamble myself. Too many pockets lined in this method.
Thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention. They like to call themselves “edgy” when the real word for them is “shady”. And no, I don’t think any of the activities mentioned here are shady. There is so much more to this organization that meets the eye…And Shedrow is spot on.
This little stunt caused a well known animal welfare organization to take them off their grant list. Sure, eating the testicles of animals is “a thing”, heck, they show up from time to time in a basket on Chopped. However, a rescue that is supposed to be representing themselves as being anti-horse slaughter, should not be making a point of cooking and eating any part of a horse, even if done expressly for the shock factor. And including children in the charade is just wrong.
Many people and legitimate organizations have had their eye on this situation, but this blog is one of the first to put everything all in one place. The blogger certainly doesn’t mince words.
And posting it on YouTube and their Facebook or website… I forget which it was on, but it was in poor taste to say the last and be ‘punny’.
I am not a fan because of that stunt, and all the other stuff.
Considering that it is SOP to inject the testicles with lidocaine when gelding, they’re either stupid, lying, or performing the “surgery” themselves without benefit of anesthesia.
That was what I was wondering, too… Plus all the anesthetic drugs and sedatives that were administered prior to gelding surgery…
I love Rocky Mountain oysters, and have no problem “collecting” them for dinner, but no way in Haites that I would eat a horse testicle. It is just not the same.
A new definition of poor taste. Pun intended
Nothing to really add, other than it seems like they were doing a good thing, and sadly may have become victims of their own success and popularity. Will read all the Shedrow Confessions posts later at home.
I do have a question – why the 4 year hiatus by the author? In the first post re: HiCaliber, the author mentions “They actually used to be a pretty decent rescue and this blog has even given them some credit in the past.” This is the only post from before May 2017 that mentions HiCaliber:

It just seems a wee bit coincidental that this blogger has come back online at this particular moment in time . . . ?
I have zero skin in this game. I have supported various equine humane organizations over the years - some excellent, some criminally deceitful, some average, and some awful. (None of us are perfect or all-knowing…) The rise and fall of EHOs is interesting from an anthropological/sociological aspect.
These poor horses.
I don’t doubt the problems with the rescue. But the blog linked to doesn’t seem fully trustworthy to me. It’s written in a confusing way and has a big feeling of grudge. It’s the kind of blog that might well be reporting a real problem, but where I’d always want to see the facts confirmed by a reliable third party.
Follow their Facebook page for a while, you’ll see for yourself if your standards are like mine, that the blog is not ‘off’, sadly.
Hi Caliber and their cozy relationship with a feedlot, and the threat of shipping to slaughter hanging over the heads of those following their exploits is very like Columbia Basin rescue of a decade or so ago.
I admire any organization that helps horses responsibly. This seems like an unsustainable business model. So many horses every single week and it’s hard to believe an equal number are getting adopted out. They mentioned a state official coming out to examine all their records and everything was in order… they also work with vets, farriers, chiros - wouldn’t they recognize if things were dire? More transparency would definitely help.
Very curious to read the next blog post…
That sounds like Kaufman kill pen, which is in TX. They get minis and mare/foal pairs, along with what appears to be some nice QH riding types. Sometimes rescues step up and fund raise. Kaufman has an active FB page, if you want to check it out.
I can’t believe they’re headed back to auction today, too. That seems like a lot of horses in critical need all at once. I wonder how many volunteers they actually get out there on a daily basis to care for all of them.
