Shedrow Memory Foam Half Pads

So today, when looking at another thread, I came across the Shedrow memory foam half pad:
http://greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=RIE5348&stricSKU=RIE5348
Looks exactly like an Ogilvy (which I’ve been eyeballing with no real intention of buying) without the brand name on it.

I am leasing a horse soon and going to be jumping, and I do have my own saddle. My trainer said the saddle should fit the horse I am looking at right now’s build, but I have to say, I do kind of want that half pad…

Being memory foam, would the pad squish down in the places where it isn’t needed but be a “filler” and shock absorber where it is needed? I won’t get it now but maybe sometime in the future. And also I have heard that memory foam gets rock solid after a while, is this true?

Does anyone have any reviews on this half pad? I don’t think I neeeeddd it but I kind of want it…(of course I won’t spend my money on it if it isn’t necessary but I will be jumping so maybe some extra protection?)

Any advice/experiences would be helpful!
Thanks in advance!

If you need one, do yourself and your horse a favour and save up for the Ogilvy. I have both. I absolutely HATE the GH pad. It’s way too thick, the foam takes a while to squish down and the foam shifts around in the cover. Also the cover started to have stitching come undone with in the first 20 rides and was not washed. I bought this to “save” money but after a month bit the bullet and ordered the Ogilvy. The customer service from Ogilvy was excellent and the foam is SO MUCH BETTER. The foam is high quality, molds quickly to the saddle and fits wonderfully. It fills in the areas that bridge and squishes where necessary. The GH pad makes me feel like I’m sitting way up and on top of the horse where as the Ogilvy makes the ride lovely and is close contact. Can’t recommend the Ogilvy enough (10/10), but wouldn’t recommend the GH pad (2/10).

I’ve seen the pad in person and thought about buying it but its SO THICK! The price pant bad but I just couldn’t see how it would squish down enough when it’s that thick. A friend of mine works for greenhawk and bought the pad, she used it for a couple of months but gave up on it and bought and oglivy which she is much happier with. If you don’t need a pad, don’t get it. If you really want one, I’d save and get a nicer one.

not really …

Save yourself some $$, if you want a pad just like the Ogilvy, buy the Ogilvy - no one else is doing a comparable product.

There are loads of saddle fit type pads on the market: once you have the saddle meets horse conversation, is soon enough to decide on which to buy, if any

I can’t say anything about personal experience, but I know 3 people who use a Shedrow Memory foam half pad. I know at least two of them have had them about a year and are still using them every ride. They haven’t come apart and I think they use them for shows too. But like you said they are REALLY thick. Funny story, a friend went to ride a pony but her regular girth was in use and one size bigger was too big. We tried to squeeze the pony in to a size smaller but ended up getting a thinner half pad. I think these pads are meant to correct a saddle that fits too wide, not just absorb shock.

The quality just isn’t there with the Greenhawk pad. I don’t like either because I can’t get my head around how memory foam is supposed to absorb shock. But don’t do it. It’s pretty junky.

I might wait and see how the saddle looks on the horse before deciding you need a half pad and what kind. The owner may specify what pads/saddle combinations you should use. The Ogilvy is a lot to shell out for if you don’t even know yet that you need anything.

I have both and see little difference between the two other than the Shedrow one was a little slower to squish down but after a few uses seems about the same. Price point is a definite advantage.

Shedrow pad is thicker and does not compress the same - prefer my Ogilvy. JMO.

If you don’t need it, don’t buy it. If you need it to help your saddle fit your horse, then go ahead, but if your saddle fits your horse then don’t waste your money on an expensive half pad.

Bumping this thread up for recommendations as a schoolie pad.

I personally have my own Ogilvy- that I am absolutely in love with. But I am curious as to how these compare to other half pads in their price range (not necessarily in comparison to Ogilvy). Wondering if I should purchase a few for our school horses. Doesnt hurt that their seperate cover comes in our colors too.

I personally have used both and now own an Ogilvy which I prefer mostly because of the branding and colours they come in. I found both to do a good job of making my saddle fit my horse but the Ogilvy is most definitely better quality and my Ogilvy still looks new after frequent use for two years. I recommend getting a second hand Ogilvy if you can find one it’s worth it but a shedrow will do the job.

Naaaatttt worth it go for the ogilvy

Kind of snowballing off of this… How does the Wilkers memory foam half pad compare to Ogilvy and the Shedrow pad? I’m having the same dilemma with price (and wait time for Ogilvy). Thanks in advance!

I just ordered the pony sized Wilkers pad for my daughter. From the day I ordered it to the day it was at my door was LESS THAN A WEEK!!! It is exactly as I ordered it. We have used it for a couple weeks now, and have had no problems with it. My daughter has commented on how much more comfortable her ride is, so I’m sure it is more comfortable for her pony as well. I wasn’t going to spend the money for a pad that she will have to upgrade eventually, but this seems like a VERY good alternative. Well made. The Customer Service was SUPER. And the timing far exceeded my expectations for a custom order!!!

I’m going to be the oddball here and say don’t invest in a memory foam pad! The memory foam often doesn’t do a great job of protecting a horse’s back as it holds in so much heat, and it eliminates the close contact feel. I rode a horse that had an Oglivy on, and it felt like I was a thousand miles away from my horse… I personally own a Thinline sheepskin pad, and it is WONDERFUL! It helps to keep the close contact feel while protecting both my horse’s and my back! Thinline half pads are so great!

I have two half pads from SweetAlyssa on etsy, one memory foam, one latex, and I really like them both but in particular I think the latex one is NICER than the ogilvy. And much less expensive.

So that could be an option as well. Mine took 2 weeks to arrive in custom colors but she sometimes has stock ones available.

I have gracefully dismounted from the Ogilvy bandwagon.

With my thoroughbred I didn’t really notice any kind of difference. With my pony, I noticed him getting back sore in the Ogilvy (with a newly fitted saddle). I bought an Equigel at a tack swap for $20 and no more back sore pony. No more tightening my girth after I get on! (Especially complicated with my dressage saddle).

The best part is no one seems to use Equigels any more so I just picked up a bunch of replacement covers for $5 each
