Shedrow Memory Foam pad covers for Oglivy pads?

So I bought an Oglivy pad and LOVE it but really want to save the current cover for shows and find something for schooling, and maybe even a cheaper way to change the covers for my shows. I know I can purchase custom made covers but they are a bit pricey at the moment and I have heard and found these Shedrow memory foam covers from Greenhawk…

…and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these fitting Oglivy pads?

They fit exactly the same as a regular size Ogilvy cover. The design is exactly the same too, just definitely way cheaper materials. It does not wash up as nicely and won’t have the longevity of the Ogilvy cover. After two washes mine doesn’t lay quite the same (the binding wants to curl under a bit) and the color on the binding has already started to fade a bit. Despite all of that it’s better than I was expecting for the price. I use it for particularly dirty/humid/sweaty weeks or when I take the Ogilvy home to wash it… basically like a “junker”. It’s perfect for that kind of use and for $40 that seems fair.

That said, I did just buy another Ogilvy in a more “dirt friendly” color combination for schooling anyway.

Pretty much typical GH MO - like MT they de-construct a competitor product & have it re-assembled at their overseas factories - as cheaply as possible: product just needs to look similar.

I’m pretty much over GH, they still hold (exclusive) distribution on a number of product lines, but product only appears in the catalog & if you order in to your local shop, it’s a final sale :frowning:
OR product still appears in catalog, GH still retains distribution, but no longer have product in their warehouse “list” ie it is no longer available
Many of the shop owners and staff are lovely but it’s an odd company.

After two washes mine doesn’t lay quite the same (the binding wants to curl under a bit) and the color on the binding looks like it’ll fade pretty quickly.

I quit on GH regular pads as the newer stuff is all prone to fading & “crinkling” or even dramatic shrinkage, “wear” after several rides was worse than the Ogilvy pads a year on.
And GH regular saddle pads are NOT particularly cheap, even at this years sale prices; it’s a shame as a friend has several older Shedrow saddle pads that are fabulous.

I second MsR.

Way lower quality material. Unlike her I paid $70 after shipping for my cover and I’m not impressed. I wish I had waited and purchased another cover from Ogilvy.

Also depending on what size pad you have theGH cover might not work.

I have the regular size but I don’t think a large pad made for a saddle 18" + would fit in this cover.

That’s about what I figure… I’m guessing you’d get about a year out of it. Right now I’m splitting use about 50/50 between the Shedrow and the Ogilvy. Once the new Ogilvy comes the Shedrow probably won’t get used on any kind of regular basis. I’ll probably keep it for trail rides or whatever kind of occasion might arise where I’d rather not use my nice Ogilvy pads.

For $40 it’s not a bad thing to have in your arsenal to spare the Ogilvy some abuse. If it was more expensive I’d pass, or if I wanted something super rugged or really nice for showing, I’d also pass. If you want a “junker” that you don’t really care about trashing or only getting a year or so out of it, then it’s a good buy. So it depends on what your needs and desired uses really are. It’s certainly not awful but it’s also certainly not Ogilvy.

Makes me wonder if it’s worth buying just for the pattern itself - you can deconstruct it and make your own. I’d love to have more covers that I don’t have to spend a fortune on when I could sew one myself… ideas…

Edit - Just saw almost 16 bucks to ship a pad cover? I might have just changed my mind!

Horsehal301 - yes that is a big “I don’t know” in my book that crazy shipping!! I keep hoping that maybe someone on Etsy would start making them, probably find a solid market for it!

My Ogilvy pad is black with purple and silver trim so somewhat friendly in terms of dirt, but I can see the wear and fading on my trim from the constant contact the area has. So was just trying to find something to prevent it. Right now it has a flower pillow case over it with a couple cuts to prevent tension. Maybe Ill just stick to my pillow case cover! haha

I’m poor and my white ogilvy was a gift. I want to keep it white, so I got a shedrow cover for everyday use. It has worked great! I would love to be able to get a custom yellow and gray ogilvy cover, but can’t justify the extra expense at this time.

Shedrow cover is used almost daily and has held up great. Ogilvy cover is only used for shows, though it is starting to show a little wear for some reason :frowning:

The materials are relatively easy to make them - you could even improve on the main cover material as well. It’s just getting the pattern down correctly with no weird ruffling and good, reinforced stitching.

Ogilvy makes a killing on their covers. It’s barely a yard of fabric, and then some piping, and binding which are not expensive. You could easily get those materials for under 30 bucks and rip multiple covers out in a matter of a few hours once you ahve a solid pattern. Cheap materials + cheap labor = lots of profit.

If I had a more professional sewing machine, I’d be all over it. I wonder if a phone call would be enough to deter them away from a 16$ price tag on shipping. I will guess, sight unseen, that folded up the correct way, it could git in a $6 USPS envelope.

Unfortunately, a $6 USPS envelope wouldn’t help with Ogilvy’s shipping costs, as they are a Canadian company. I don’t think Canada Post has the same kinds of flat-rate shipping options.

I bought mine on sale and split the shipping with other people on one order, so it was much cheaper. There’s definitely no way I’d pay the full price plus the full shipping price (which to me would be $24 from Canada) for it. Just to be clear.

Also not a seamstress and have zero desire to make them myself, hence why I just caved and bought another Ogilvy.
