Shedrow sheets?

I personally actually like Shedrow blankets (well, not the second one you linked to, but most models). I think the sizing can run a bit inconsistent though, which can make for some disappointment.

I am a baker hater (gasp, oh no, I said it on a h/j forum. I will probably be tarred and feathered now). I find them to fit very few horses nicely in the shoulders and neck. The belly straps come undone all. the. time. And the heavy weight ones are the most shavings attractive thing everrrrrrrrrrrrrr (oooops, sorry that was all my rage coming out).

So when I needed something in that weight range I absolutely refused to buy a Baker (or, even have one given to me, as they also shrink, and the barns I work at would have had a big supply for my midget). I went with the Shedrow West Palm. It was a good blanket…not quite as warm as the Bakers, but definitely much warmer than a regular sheet. I used it both with his (again, Shedrow) sheet underneath, or on it’s own, no slipping or rubbing (caveat though, my guy was pretty narrow in front, it might not work as well on something big fronted). It definitely did not attract shavings…hooray!. It’s not a terrible option, especially as it sounds like you just need something for a bit. That said, I picked mine up at like half price…so I’m evaluating from that perspective.

This was all before they came out with the heavy plaid thing. I’ve seen them but haven’t had the experience of caring for a horse wearing one, so I can’t really review.

Blankets are my obsession. I only have quarter horses right now, and IMHO the Big D is the absolute best stable sheet on the market. BMB made a really good blanket back in the day, but pretty sure they are out of business. Sometimes you can find them on ebay either new (they often got handed out as trophies at horse shows and people never used them) or gently used.

Not sure the stable sheet is necessarily what you are looking for though. For a slightly warmer sheet, I really like lined turnout sheets. My favorite for fit for longer, narrower (more TB type horses) is the Weatherbeeta. The slick lining “polishes” the coat (unlike fleece, which will rub the hair on your horses’ shoulders) and the lining adds just enough warmth for my Texas horses during the day this time of year. FWIW, we don’t clip our horses; we keep them under lights so they never grow a winter coat (their color is much prettier that way). Downside - on every Weatherbeeta sheet I have have put on one particular mare, the lining ends up ripping in the shoulder gussets. I also don’t find the 600D fabric tough enough for turnout with other horses. For standing in a stall I think it’s the perfect alternative to a mid weight blanket; I have not had a Weatherbeeta slide around or rub the coat.

My favorite turnout sheet for durability is the Tough-1 1200D. I have 3 and have used them a ton. They will even work over top of a stable blanket on a horse that is destructive or when I run out of dry turnout rugs. One of the 3 doesn’t fit right no matter what horse I put it on, so I may have gotten a dud (so that may say something about quality control).

I had to kick a show horse outside 2 winters ago in the dead of winter when he had zero hair, because I had a broodmare go lame (another mare kicked her) and I had to have his stall. I dressed him in a full-body lycra sheet (the kind that covers the horse nose to tail), layered a medium weight Big D stable blanket over that (to cover his butt right up to his tail - also has a belly band), then layered a Tough-1 turnout blanket and hood over that. His coat stayed perfect and nothing ripped, tore, or rubbed a single hair on him. I decided after that experience that the lycra sheets are worth their weight in gold - but they will only work if you can keep them covered by another blanket, or have that one in a million horse that leaves his blankets alone (and doesn’t have a friend who can/will tear it for him).

Triple Crown used to make a very thin stable blanket with a slick nylon lining that was awesome, although it fit IMHO like a mini-skirt on deep chested horses. Is Triple Crown even in business anymore?

I have always wanted to try one of the “Hug” blankets but I am not buying new stable blankets, only turnout blankets. I like the Tough-1 1680D turnout rug with the lycra face / 1200D hood as a complete outfit. Perfect fit and wore like iron on two mares who had to spend last winter outdoors.

I will echo that Shedrow is in general overpriced for what you get, and that the fit is not the best.

The West Palm sheet isn’t bad, but it can be staticy and its a PITA to wash because hair clings to it. I had one, but don’t use it at all anymore.

If you’re on a budget, the Canadian Horsewear blankets from Pleasant Ridge are actually very good value, IMO, and they have a pretty nice fit and don’t rub my horses in the shoulder at all. The also are 1200D, so they don’t rip super easily.

If you are not experienced in buying blankets, higher denier = less likely to rip. I don’t buy anything under 1200D that will be worn outside - they just don’t hold up, no matter the brand.

If your horse will only be wearing the blanket inside or perhaps under a rain sheet, a baker type would likely do you well.

You can get Bakers in a lighter weight sheet, or a “double” weight one that is warmer. Bahr’s has both the Baker styles and the Can-Pro knocks offs of both of these, as well as a fleece-lined Baker knock off that I really like. http://www.bahrsaddlery.com/can-pro-classic-fleece-lined-blanket.html

I believe you can tell the difference between the single and double weights as the singles are usually referred to as a “sheet” whereas the double weight is referred to as a “blanket”.

This may or may not interest you, but I figured I’d share anyhow

I have one and I like it quite a bit. Its basically a stable blanket, lined with a very light fleece, that hardy enough for turnout. I was pleasantly surprised, especially for the price.

Add me to the hate Shedrow blankets club. The last 2-3 years every blanket I bought from greenhawk has rubbed my horses’ shoulders. I have changed over to Horsewear brand now as they seem to sit to the front of the withers and stops shoulder rubs. The shedrows seem to sit too far behind the wither, and when they slip back, rub the shoulders. Or that’s what I feel happened to my guys.

Okay, I’m going to look for something used by horseware, weatherbeeta or baker, but if nothing turns up I’ll purchase an unfilled turnout. Thanks so much for all the help!

Where are you located? Presumably Canada since you mention Greenhawk, but some horse stores have their own brands of blankets that are cheaper and there are a bunch of places that do second hand. (A few Greenhawks in Ontario have second hand sections and you might find a nicer blanket for cheaper).

I don’t like buying blankets online unless I am 100% of the fit (aka. have the same exact blanket already) because it can be a huge hassle and half the time it takes a few tries for me to find the correct one, though I do have a harder to fit horse. I have a shedrow and am not a fan of the fit compared to the Bucas I have.

If you are looking for a cheaper blanket you might want to see if anywhere near you has Cavalier blankets (link). I picked up a stable sheet of theirs when I was tight on money, but needed something. I can’t remember which one it is, but it cost me about 60 bucks and is a great fit and still holding strong two years on.

Are you looking for something for indoor use or outdoor use? A turnout sheet isn’t likely to be the most comfortable option for indoor use…

How cold is it? If it’s 0-10 Celsius I have a lined sheet, no filler, the liner of the sheet adds enough warmth. If -5 to 0 Celsius or really windy I have the sheet plus a medium weight Amigo blanket 100g turnout on top.He is not clipped but has a very thin coat as he was blanketed all winter.

As far as blanket quality here is what I have now:

Shedrow is terrible for all the stable liners I have tried (multiple styles). Should have just bought good quality ones from the get go. They didn’t fit right and didn’t last a season

As far as horsewear products go: Mio is very cheap. I have a basic rain sheet that didn’t stand up. The Rhino has been excellent thus far. I have a medium Amigo turnout that also has done very well. Rambo cotton sheet looks like excellent quality, haven’t put it to any hard work yet. Rambo winter blanket is good too.

Turtleneck brand: winter turnout excellent, excellent, excellent. Can’t say enough good things about fit and durability.

Big D: made an excellent very durable stable blanket, 250g I think. I use it as my spring blanket and just a rain sheet over top as needed for the brisker days. Lasted through two different horses. Pretty good for a liner!!

I’ve had good luck with Shedrow blankets, in general. I use their “Elite” line for winter turnout. This year it’s gotten very limited use (maybe a week), but last year it was on all day for about 3 months of hard use. It still looks new, and didn’t rub my old mare at all. The “comfort neck” design really worked for her.

I also have a few of their stable blankets - a waffle one, a regular nylon, and a fleece. They fit well and have held up very well for their price. I’ve had a few for close to ten years and no rips or tears.

I don’t have any blankets in heavy rotation, so I’m sure that helps, but I think any blanket that gets even semi regular use and holds up over 10ish years is pretty decent.

Shedrow rubs my horses shoulders seemingly no matter which sheet/blanket I pick. Also the last few I have bought I have been very unimpressed.
I have had good luck with the Goliath brand http://www.sprucewoodtack.com/horse-clothing/sheets/turnout-rain-sheets/goliath-mid-neck-rainsheet.html
I have also had a Bucas Freestyle sheet, but sadly I have discovered it has not held up very well, and only after one spring and one fall of use.
