Sheep bedding help please?

I bought these two bottle lambs back around Easter, knowing nothing about lambs or sheep and basically just learning as I go. Theyve been GREAT fun and I just love them. My one problem/question is regarding flies. Flies seem to swarm their shed where they sleep. I’m sure its because of the poo and pee in there since there arent flies swarming the pasture. I do clean out their shed on a very regular basis and I’ve been using straw for bedding since wood shavings get caught in their wool (I plan on using the wool). Is there something safe I can put down under the straw (directly on the ground) to absorb pee, eliminate smells, and deter flies? Is lime safe to use? Sweet PDZ?

I’d use sweet pdz… you can also just spray the shed with a premises spray and that will knock back the flies. We use permectin 2 and mix our own and spray down the barns, ect and don’t have much of a fly problem at all even with all our livestock/pets.

Thanks for your reply! My only concern with the Sweet PDZ is that since its pelleted…will they eat it? I do have Permethrin 10 at home…is that similar to Permectin 2?

I think it would be ok, the sweet pdz is more of a powder, like laundry soap consistancy… and if you put that down under the straw they shouldn’t fuss with it I don’t think

Yep your Permethrin 10 is the same idea, just spray their shelter and it should help a lot! We just sprayed everything yesterday, we have a ton of wasps and yellowjackets this year along with the flies… knocked them all down.

Both stall dry and Sweet PDZ come in a granular form (I have actually never seen the pellets).

Hmm, I must be mistaken the pellets for something similar I got on sale one time.

At any rate, thanks for the help/advice! I’m off to spray their house this evening.
