I remember those days well - too bad - he died far too young.
I hope someday the mystery is solved.

Steve Cauthen and Frankie Dettori remember their friend.
What a nice tribute from his friends.
Gosh this week is full of bad news…
The game demands so much, physically and emotionally, of its jockeys. It is time the sport puts as much attention to human welfare as it does to equine welfare. In an era of healthy life styles and modern medicine jockeys are surviving day to day at a level with other life styles normally relegated to addiction and individually abusive behavior. Dying at 40 or 50 without suffering a serious terminal disease shouldn’t happen.
Posthumous tributes are great for the living but useless for the dead.
How very true.
Just making the weight is often very detrimental to health.
As with any form of extreme dieting it takes its toll on vital organs. I’m sure most jockeys have professional advice regarding nutrition but it is a serious struggle for many.
I still want to know why and how the Irish terrorists killed Shergar.
I don’t blame his owner for not paying the ransom since he was probably already dead when they demanded the ransom.
The kidnappers were idiots. It may be as simple as that. The kidnappers didn’t even know who to negotiate with. They believed it was the Aga Khan, but actually at the time of Shergar ’ s kidnapping he had been syndicated with the owners being primarily American.
My guess is/was that the kidnappers were connected to the IRA and took the horse, but did not know what to do with a stallion or how to handle him or where to hide him and then s.s.s. = shoot, shovel, shut-up. A friend of ours had an ill-gotten youth in Ireland - so that was his theory, but then, nobody really knows.
Someday, I hope.
