anyone have one (or more) that they drive with? I had originally kept my search limited to a B size mini but haven’t found quite what I’m looking for so have expanded my search and came across a nice 42 inch “classic” american bred shetland mare that I’d like to check out further but would like to hear others thoughts on the breed in general.
Great breed, really tough, strong and tough…just don’t let em’ get fat or founder.
My first pony was a Shetland…an evil Shetland…he was also driveable. He pulled me and my other kid friends all over Mackinac Island forever during our summers there.
If you can find a classic Thelwell Shetland, get him, they really are nice driving ponies (no fancy action, but they chug along)…they do swear a lot though as do all ponies.

Swear! Ponies are amazingly profane…just look at their little fuzzy faces as they trot down the road…they’re swearing the whole time. 
I like it but at least they do it with an English accent.

I love ASPC Shetlands, especially Classic and Foundation. My Classic mare and my Shetland-esque B gelding don’t swear, but they often laugh at me. They are very intelligent and extremely bonded to me. Neither has an English accent…Scarlett, in fact, talks like a valley girl.
Their extra length of leg makes an enormous difference in their movement, especially at the extended trot. And 42 inches means you could still get a HyperBike, should you ever desire.
so far so good then on the shetlands as a nice possibility as a driving pony good!
now can I vent for a minute? Why oh why do folks think that just because a mini or pony has a uterus they need to turn it out with their stallion??? Yesterday I came across a very nice mini mare with nearly all my criteria that I’ve been searching forever for…and then after spending nearly an hour on the phone with the seller she says “well I guess I’d better mention she may be preggers as she’s been running with my stallion (of god only knows what origin) for a few weeks now…”
banging my head on my desk now, I absolutely do not want a bred mare. If I did I’d have specifically been looking for one 
I was wondering how the more modern (as in Modern Pleasure Shetland) tends to do for driving outside the showring. Anyone have any experience with them?
