Shipping a horse to Mexico????

Anyone have any experience shipping a horse to Mexico? The horse is located in Florida and the destination is somewhere in the vicinity of the Arizona border, sorry don’t have the exact destination.

Thanks!

This one ought to be good.

Was actually wondering the same thing - SO wants to have a winter home on the pacific coast there, but I don’t want to leave my horse behind

Arizona is not all that close to the Ocean though…

oh, never mind…2 different people

Okay guys I know it sounds weird but well horse people are weird. Its not for slaughter obviously. A buyer in Mexico saw a horse that a friend of mine has for sale (online) and is really seriously interested in it and happens to be in Mexico. Of course seller is going to check everything out thoroughly before proceeding with sale. I already found a lot of information on the process you have to go through but was just wondering if anyone on this board had gone through it and how they did it, etc. I know its sounds crazy I think so too but well I never understand why people ship horses from East coast to West Coast, etc. However this is coming from a Floridian who owns two horses that came to me from Michigan.

well…I am assuming the friend was asking more than 300 bucks for the horse.

Aside from the boarder stuff, paper work etc, it should be straight forward.

Was mostly looking for any companies that do cross border shipping.

The paperwork required is pretty much all health related. Health cert, vaccinations, Coggins, etc. Cost is very cheap. Maybe cost you 150.00 for what you need. Another 50.00 or so for the import broker agent. Check the USDA site for requirements.
As long as you don’t want the horse to come back into the US it’s cheap. If you try to get INTO the US, it will cost you around 1500.00.

Alagirl- Puerto Penasco is about 40 miles from the AZ border and is a well known beach resort for americans wanting to enjoy Mexican beaches. It’s on the Gulf of California, on the western side of Mex.

PM Shawnee Acres on here. She sold a horse for me a few years back and the buyer was in Mexico. It was quite the hassle and she did a lot of running around to get everything done.

thanks guys I knew you all would know!!

I know lots of people who have bought and sold across the border. My neighbor sold two down there fairly recently, I’ll see if I can find out which company she had ship.

There are plenty of serious horsepeople and big time $$$$$ in horses in Mexico, I don’t know why anyone would think it’s weird that people in Mexico buy nice horses.

well, I think it’s a it out of left field, considering the experience most of us have with Mexico and things South of the border.
Not even thinking it to be prejudicial, but just surprising.

Ditto. I have a galpal who sold a very nice Andalusian down there. She was also nervous, but is getting regular communications from the folks who bought the horse so all appears well.

FWIW there are plenty of Mexicans that love horses, just like here. Not everyone down there is a horse tripper, a slaughterhouse worker or someone looking to launder money. Imagine if all Americans got judged by the horse ads on Craigslist or by the recent headlines about horse management by, say, Crundwell or Jackie McConnell.

couldn’t be very hard as my daughter used compete in 3 day eventing and a team from Mexico was there nearly everytime

thanks guys the buyer sounds legit and is very excited about the horse who has some unique things that I can see why they inquired on him. this might work out!!!

A bit of an outside the box idea would be to see if any top BNR/trainers are heading down to the mexico show circuit during the winter. Pretty the big shows are october-november. Horse might be able to hitch a ride with them.

Anyone have any experience shipping a horse to Mexico? The horse is located in South Texas and the destination is Nayarit Mexico. It is a present from my friend. He loves horses but he is old and he can not take care of them no more. That’s why I would like to take them to my ranch in Mexico. He knows I will take care of them.

Thanks!

Since this thread is being revived, if anyone has experience with shipping horses to the U.S. from Mexico (specifically, Monterrey, MX -> West Coast) I would be interested in hearing about them! Specifically, transport companies, quarantine, costs, etc.

I am also interested in possibly shipping a horse to Mexico. I am in Northern California and would like to move a horse to Nayarit if I end up moving down there myself.

Equine Express might have some info for crossing the border, or at least be able to provide direction. Being based in Texas, they probably get this question?
