I am in the middle of doing due diligence one a horse in Spain. Assuming I can move forward with the purchase, I am asking for advice on companies to handle the transport to LAX and then to the barn. Any recommendations as to who to use and any tips on what to look for and what to do or not do to make this a smooth transport and good trip for the horse.
I use Equijet for all of mine. For better or worse, they make it as easy as shopping online can be.
I used The Dutta Corp because Equijet never got back to me about the quote/scheduling a flight i tried to follow up, and they said they would get back to me shortly after looking at the info… and nothing. If they can’t be bothered to do that, then I’m not trusting my horse with them. Seemed odd because I think that they have a good reputation? So I don’t know what happened. Just turned me off a bit. The communication was quick and very good with Dutta.
Thank you and I sent Equijet an RFP a few days ago and am still waiting… and to your point, if they can’t get back in a reasonable amount of time, I don’t want my horse with them. Will check with Dutta.
Horseflight was also quite responsive.
I imported a horse from spain a couple years ago - early COVID. Dutta was extremely good to work with, cant say enough good about them. At that time, I had to have the horse shipped from Spain to Amsterdam, which is a long road trip. I’m not certain but I do think Dutta does flights from somewhere in Spain, and that the problem then was COVID lockdowns. They made all arrangements for US ground transportation as well, so that should take care of LAX to your barn. Good luck.
Thank you and thanks for the heads up about Amsterdam!
I’m surprised to hear that. I’ve imported five through them within the last year.
BTW, OP, mine, from various places in Europe, have all come through Liege (Belgium) with the exception of one who came through Frankfurt over the holidays when flights were scarce. Regardless of who you use, I’d definitely expect some ground transport on the Euro side.
Thanks for the heads up! It makes sense that only a few airports accommodate horse flights
I have a friend who has imported several from Spain, and uses this company: https://flyandcohorse.com/ Not a lot of details on the website or FB page but they are located in Girona Spain
I didn’t think to ask: did you work thru someone to find this horse? There are a number of agent types who are regularly showing horses to prospective clients and I’m sure they do not all ship to Amsterdam or Frankfurt, etc.
Anyway the distance to Amsterdam is roughly 1100 - 1400 miles depending on start point. Mine got a couple days rest before the flight at Dutta’s facility. They either hand walked or put out in small paddock while there. Sent me pictures. Mine also had a long haul on the US end as I was unable to get him to Miami, had to fly to JFK.
Thank for the additional information! That’s very helpful.
And no, I am not working with an agent but found the horse with a trainer there I know.
I LOVE Uncle Tim. I have used Dutta for years and only trust Dutta. They work hand in hand with transport in the EU, so they will find the quickest and less stressful journey for your horse.
(I personally have travelled with the horses via Dutta).
