Hi all- anyone shipped their horse recently? What is the going rate per mile? Would you mind sharing your trip ( city to city) and cost? Just trying to get an idea if the quotes I have received are crazy high.
November 2016, Brook ledge, Columbus Ohio to Ocala Florida, box stall $1500.
956 miles.
~.70-$1.00/mile. In the past year, 2,300 miles OR to MI, $2,000 for a yearling filly/box stall on a slant load. 1,900 miles AZ to MI, $1,750 for a 2 year old mare/box stall on a semi rig. 1,300 miles TX to MI, $750 (initially quoted $875 but hauler had to reschedule and gave “discounted” rate) for a 10 yr old gelding/single stall on a slant load
Not super recent but within the past few years.
March 2013, Hilton Head Island, SC to Greeley, CO. Roughly 1800 miles. $2000 for a box stall with Nationwide. I wouldn’t recommend them but I did have a good experience.
March of this year, Washington State to Virginia. Brookledge, box stall and a lay over. $4300
Between .75 and $2 a mile, probably plus hook up charges. The range is wide because it is dependent on how many horses are sharing the ride and remote (not near an interstate or the route of the rest of the load) pick up or drop off points for a single horse.
Beware non licensed, uninsured subcontractors or independents in questionable trucks and trailers. You get what you pay for and even the best can have problems.
Shipped in a box from Edmonton to Toronto (3600km) with IHT. Paid $3000 Canadian including tax. Air ride transport.
A similar outfit quoted me at about half that but I heard some horror stories and decided to ship with IHT again.
I have had pretty good luck with using uship but only accepting bids from pretty big commercial haulers who are looking to fill loads. Shipped from Ocala to Virginia for a little under 500, and Ocala to Topeka area for around the same. Provided you can be very flexible on dates and have an accessible vet, you can find some good deals.
That said, I’ve also paid 1500 a piece shipping horses from the mid west to the mid-atlantic when my needs and dates were more specific/limited
ETA my rates from Ocala were immediately following WEF so this undoubtedly heavily impacted those rates.
AL to VA, approx 700 mi, major commercial hauler quoted $695 for stall and a half. Ended up going with private hauler due to timing, not cost, but it was about $100 less.
