Shiraz the wonder horse update thread (prior: Horse shopping!)

YAY omg congrats! Enjoy her! And enjoy all the new horse gear shopping - I find myself splurging every time I have something new. Maybe not smart, but it’s fun!

shes literally a dream come true

This weekend both my horses tried to get themselves killed or at least give me a heart attack. Shiraz had choke. It was dramatic; I know as emergencies go, it’s not that serious but by george was I terrified. She coughed and strained her neck and looked so miserable until the vet got there with banamine. Two hours later still no dice so the vet came back and we tubed her. Apparently she was difficult to tube - more difficult than a mini the vet had had to do that day as well, according to her - and we got that terrible grain out of her. All of this because she decided to woof up her grain that morning for no darn reason.

My other one, my old baby, got stung on the eye by a wasp and her eye blew up to a ridiculous proportion where we were worried the skin would split. Steroids and antihistamines in that one solved it- it’s still a bit swollen today but way better.

Why’d they have to do it on the same weekend? GOSH! I was planning on riding both of them, I guess they heard that and said NO WAY MOM, NO NICE AUTUMN RIDES FOR YOU!

Shiraz had to do her choke right during our lesson slot too so it’s been moved to next week. Hopefully we will be able to jump a few sticks for fun on Saturday. I’ll try to get videos. It’ll be nice to look back at what we looked like my second ever time jumping her vs this time next year.

Today I hand walked her through the trails. Tomorrow hopefully I’ll ride her for the first time since the Saturday choke incident.

This Sunday is a charity trail ride off property so I’ll update you all on that :)!

Well our charity ride went very strangely. We were fine for about a half an hour when she decided she was done and reared me off without so much as preamble. I landed under her (!!!) and she held perfectly still while I got myself out of that situation. GOOD GIRL. SO much could have gone wrong had she tried to move with my belly up in the air between her legs. I got back on and we continued until her next mini-meltdown where I got off and hand-walked her for about half an hour before getting back on again. At that point she was delightful- but had to be in the front and out-walked even our Frisian!! I was worried the whole ride she would rear me off again so I was relaxed, sure, but on high alert at the same time, but she honestly didnt put a foot wrong after that. My coach and I have both come to the conclusion she just needs to do this kind of thing more- she’d never been on a trail ride with other horses to my knowledge, never gone with me on a trail ride for that long, and hasnt been off property with me yet so considering everything i give her a solid 8/10. I have a bruised buttocks! Such is life.

We are doing well so far!! Our walk and trot is becoming quite lovely. Our canter though she needs to relax first, and frame up second: she gets so stressed off the left in the canter and we are practicing it with no inside hand and a quiet seat to get it reaaaally stretchy and caaaalm. Haven’t had the chance to jump her since our first ride together (obvs a relaxed canter would work best for that) will keep updating you. Here’s some fall photos where I inadvertently matched the trees!!!

I’ve been too chicken to hack her out since the incident haha. I’ll get over it and we will try try again.
