Shivers and Vitamin E question

For those of you who supplement with Vit E for shivers, what are your suggestions for getting the 8000IUE in a horse that is a reluctant eater? Is it possible to get an injectable? I’m speaking with our vet tomorrow but wanted to have all my questions lined up. I also read that someone supplemented with Frankincense, but only saw that posted once. Has anyone else used Frankencense? I will also be asking about Selinium, but again, she is a very reluctant eater. Thank you all - I spent about 2 hours yesterday reading all the previous posts and the UMin study and have learned a lot.

I can tell you that selenium is available in injectable form (used it on dairy cattle pre-calving) BUT you run the risk of a neurological reaction. It’s rare and your vet probably won’t tell you because it is so rare, but, lemme tell ya, once you’ve seen it, you take precautions. Not sure I’d do it on a horse … after my experience with the neurological reaction I always did drive by needling in very deep bedding in loose housing with other cattle excluded from the area. I honestly don’t think I’d be 100% comfortable doing a horse.

Can you use liquid Elevate in a syringe in the mouth?

Definitely an option, also not her favorite but apple juice may help.

what product are you using? If 8000IU of a regular powder/pellet/oil/gel cap, then I would try maybe 4000-6000IU of Emcelle, which is a pretty small amount.

If you’re using powder, you might try pellet - UltraCruz Natural E pellet.

I syringe Emcelle 2x daily. He won’t eat it but isn’t too sad about the syringe.

Second the Ultra Cruz pellets. 1 34g scoop supplies 4000 IU, so it’s a pretty small volume for the amount that you get. It’s been a game changer for my picky TB.

Excellent. Thank you! As of this moment we have not added anything - but I was hoping to limit experimentations since she is so reluctant to eat.
