Shoeing for ringbone?

I would love to hear shoeing/trimming techniques that you have used successfully with ringbone. I realize it can be location dependant but for now I’d like to hear about both - trim of the foot, cycle length, type of shoes and pads used if any. I’m confident in my farrier’s skills but this is my first go with ringbone so just trying to educate myself to the fullest while I wait for our appointment.

Thank you!

For severe high ringbone (from pasture accident), the farrier at the vet school used a steward clog screwed on (kind used for laminitis) with a cast on the hoof to ensure it stayed put. I think we were on a 5 wk schedule. Of course, she was not ridden with a clog on.

We tried a natural balance shoe and pads first, but those did not help. The clogs made a tremendous difference in her comfort. It was like night and day. I had seriously been considering euthanasia. The ringbone is now fused, and she is a barefoot pasture pet getting a natural trim every 4-5 weeks.

Alcohol fusion was new and untried for high ringbone at that time. You might want to find out if this is an alternative in your case.
