Shoo Fly leggings

I have read past year’s posts about these. I have decided that my horse may benefit from fly boots if he’ll tolerate them! I was reading that people last year were not happy with the durability of shoo fly boots anymore. Is that true this year as well? Has the quality permanently gone down or was last year a bad year?

thanks

Mine have held up. I usually get two summers out of a set.

Mine look like hell, and I get them repaired as much as possible. I will need new ones for next year.

They get beat up, but I usually get two seasons out of them.

I used to get two seasons out of mine, but this year’s are not going to even make it one :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: I keep cheap Amazon ones around us backups. They aren’t nearly as durable, but they’re also significantly cheaper.

They get not pretty very quickly, but the set I bought this year should be fine for next year too.

My set should last a season, of 24/7 wear. I’ll call that good!

If I cared about looks, I’d have a second set. But I don’t.

The horse I use them on pulls them off but they generally don’t get torn up. The other kinds get torn up pretty quickly because they end up under the hoof or the velcro gets torn off when she removes them. A few have gotten bush-hogged when I couldn’t find them in the pasture before the mower came to mow. I can’t blame the leggings for that.

I’ve always been happy enough with the quality. I get about 2 fly seasons out of them, roughly May- September.

I’ve tried a couple other similarly designed brands and I still like the Shoo Fly Leggins best so long as the horse fits within their sizing (most do).

Mine look about the same as last year - rough after a couple of months of near 24/7 wear. The worst are the backs since my mare interferes, so is extra rough on them. They still do their job though

I didn’t invest in these this year and wish I had. I went on vacation in mid-May, brought COVID home and then my Mom had a health emergency (besides COVID). Fly leggings were rather far down the list. Kind of late in the season now. I will definitely get some next year. I have only gotten a year out of mine. The first set I got 2 years ago had the old stuff around the cuff and the stays popped out and rubbed after a short time (2-ish months). The last set had the black nylon around the bottom and they lasted the season but were ready thread bare at the end of the year.

The ones I got late last year were NOT as good as the previous set. One was ripped within a week.

I tried the Chick’s version and they are even worse, plus they are sized smaller than Shoo Fly Boots.

I purchased last summer and so far so good. Two seasons so far and knocking on wood, they should be fine for next season.

My horses are very easy on horse clothes/boots, etc.

Mine are pretty beat up, but this is their 3rd season? I now have 7 boots for 1 horse (used all until this summer) so I think I can manage another year before I replace them. They may not be pretty, but they’re still functional.

I’m on my second pair. The first pair technically would’ve still worked, but they were looking hella rough. I’m on the second season with my current pair, and they’re not pretty, but they still do their job. It’ll probably be time for a new pair next year with current ones as back-ups.
Stablemate has the cheaper Amazon ones. I take care of the horse, and I definitely prefer the Shoo-flys. The Amazon ones fit weird and are made of less durable material.

I did the Chicks ones for 2 horses and they are holding up well but they do run small.

I switched to Stomp Stompers and think they are closer to the old Shoo Fly quality. They will also make custom sizes for a small additional fee.

Do not buy the SHIRES fly boots. They just wad up under hoof, hugely disappointed. My shoo flies are ugly, but ok. The donkey’s look terrible, but he lies down and rolls a ton, putting a lot of abrasion on them.

My Shoo Flys are on year 3 and still going strong. I do take them off at 930p and back on at 6am.

OK, going strong might be a slight exaggeration. They are somewhat tattered but fully usable. The velcro has all stayed in place and there are no holes.

They are a HUGE gamechanger. No stomping is HUGE for the health of the foot and leg it seems to me.

I do clean them with Dawn and a scrub brush at the end of fly season and stored away til next year.

I got Shoo Fly’s about 2 years ago and they’re still going strong. This year is the first that they’ve been on basically 24/7 in the field since… April? In previous years, they were only worn for part of the day/primarily while stalled. They have taken an absolute beating this year. They look somewhat ratty BUT they have been getting 0 care. My pair are hot pink so they show all the dirt/mud and I don’t have a second set I’m changing them out with. No issues with them slouching or ripping.
