Shopping for an OTTB

I have an acquaintance that is searching for a young (4-6 year old) OTTB mare. She has been searching the internet, but most of what she is seeing on horses straight off the track with little to no retraining. Ideally, she would want something that has had 4-6 months of retraining. She is looking for a 15.3-16.1 hand mare that will show hunters and that would possibly allow her to fox hunt 3rd flight.

She is located in central Va. Can you provide links or contact information for resellers that put a few months of mileage on their horses and that have mares?

Thank you for helping this lady find her next horse.

Jessica Redman with www.benchmarksporthorses.com has mostly ones off the track, but she may have some insight. She’s a fabulous reseller and has an excellent reputation. I have personally bought from her.

OTTB Connect on Facebook is a good place to look.

Keep an eye on Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center. They do really nice retraining. They don’t have as many mares right now as they do geldings, but often times it’s the opposite. https://www.secretariatcenter.org/horses-available I adopted a horse from here. They do nice work. They are in Lexington at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Not sure if she would consider purchasing on video since she’s in VA, but I purchased my OTTB from a trainer in Ocala that often puts some nice starter miles on them - she has huge acreage and expects them to hack out alone. I think she has at least 2 cute mares right now… Charlie Brunson of CharlieHorse Sales. Very honest and open, and she selects quality horses from her connections on the track. I’m absolutely crazy about the horse I got from her about a year and a half ago :-).

Agree also about checking Maker’s Mark, and maybe also After the Races, and New Vocations?

I recommend looking at Pacific Farms with Tom and Clare Mansmann (http://www.pacificfarmsinc.com). They have a good amount of experience with OTTBS (they put on a masterclass clinic at the end of this years RRP TB Makeover) and often have a great selection of nice quality horses for sale. I believe they also offer some sort of program of selecting a horse straight of the track, based on client’s needs/wants, and putting X amount of rides on them for some sort of package price. Either way their horses are well rounded and they are very nice people to work with. ETA they are in VA so not too far hopefully.

Has she checked out New Vocations? She’d have to travel to see the horses in person, but there are a few locations:

My farrier is selling a nice TB. He’s $1500.00, very sensible but he is greenish. He’s been under saddle around 3-4 months. He’s sound with really good feet and never raced. PM if you want his info. He’s not mine and I get no commission.

Nvmd… horse is a gelding.
