Shopping Help: Burgundy Tailcoat

I need a burgundy tailcoat in my life. It’s the perfect color for my little black horse, picture below for tax.

I know FairPlay has an option, but I don’t like how their coats fit me in general. What other options are out there?

I’ve heard good things about the custom coats from Jo McCracken at Southeast Sporthorse. Unfortunately I have no idea what the price point is.

Annie’s Equestrienne might also have a burgundy in their coats, but their sizing has gotten rather restrictive so YMMV on whether they’ll fit you.

I am not nor ever have been needing such a garment but at least around here in Fort Worth there are many personal clothing tailors who could custom make such a garment.

Flying Changes out of the UK. You can purchase both stock coats and custom options. Their remote fitting service is next to none. I had a beautiful short coat made that fits me perfectly all based on photos and measurements.

I had a custom shad made by Adi Valentino Suyitno in Indonesia in just a few weeks for under $300 delivered. The measurements I sent him were a bit too generous so I had it taken in slightly after it arrived. Found him through the FB page “Show Jacket Addiction Group” and through FB searches found friends who had bought multiple coats from him and were happy, so I took the plunge. He has a lot of color and fabric options. All communication was done through FB Messenger and you pay upfront.

I’ve shown in it twice and got positive turnout comments from both judges.

He has lots of pics in his FB albums if you friend him. And plenty can be found searching the SJAG page.

Thanks for this. How did you go about choosing the material? I am in Southern California, and have really developed an appreciation for the“technical” fabrics that are being used in recent years, it’s hot here most of the year.

Wow, you were not kidding.

Please share a photo of the two of you when you find your tails!

I got what he describes as lightweight with some stretch. I’m in hot and humid SC. I rode in this in May and June when jackets were waived. I like the technical fabric of my Equiline shad better but considering the price and full custom sizing and all the custom color and trim options I’m pretty happy with it. As an ammy showing one horse it’s usually only one class a day when I show FEI.

You might be able to pay him to ship you some fabric sample. I just took the plunge and it was worth it.

Jimmy Sardelli at The In Gate carries the Flying Changes line in the US. I’ve seen some of his custom shadbellies and they are gorgeous. He’s currently at the Kentucky Horse Park but travels quite a bit so it’s worth reaching out to him. The options for buttons and lining are amazing. The hunter people even have a little fun.
