Does anyone have recommendations for lightweight turnout rugs that run short through the body? I’m really not in love with the fit of my guy’s current lw turnout. He’s 14.2 but because he has big shoulders and is quite long for his leg length, he’s currently in a 75 (though might be able to squeeze into a size smaller) and I find it hangs down awkwardly around his legs.
The Saxon ones have a quite short drop and I’ve had good luck with them especially given the price. I usually order from statelinetack.com
Agree with @Highflyer1. The Saxon has a comfortably short drop on my average sized horse. Now, on my warmblood fatty, it looks like a miniskirt! They tend to wear like iron too.
Ditto the Saxons, they fit my pony nicely through the shoulder and neck but are not long drop wise.
Thanks all! I just ordered one of the Saxon lightweight rugs and we’ll see if it fits!
I find both Rhinos and Amigos to have a short drop. I have them both plus rambos for both my hefty warmblood and sleek QH. WB is 16.3 and QH is 15 something yet they both wear a 75. The rhinos look like a miniskirt on my WB but fit the QH well. The WB does best with Rambo — much longer drop.
Agreed about the rhinos! The amigos I find are a little longer but I have one on my long in the body, short legged large pony and once you do up the straps it fits quite nice.
I have an older Amigo that has about the same drop as my Rambos. BUT, I bought a Rhino recently and it was quite short. They don’t make things like they used to? It was sort of ridiculous.
I bought a Showman turnout for my pony from Chicks and it fit her horribly, very tight in the shoulders and the drop was way too short for her. It did fit great in the length though. Now it’s a cat bed.
Try Schneider’s. Anything but the “Euro” cut. I have Arabs, so all my horses are built like yours sounds like he is - short but wide/broad. Nothing in the Rambo/Rhino/Amigo/Saxon style has ever fit any of them well. The drop is absurd. I will never understand why size 66-74 blankets in those brands are made with a drop length suitable for a 16+ hand horse!
For comparison, this is a size 66 Amigo Bravo PONY Plus - this drop length in a pony cut makes ZERO sense (please disregard the fencing and her mane - it was a temporary boarding situation while I was moving):
This is the same filly, same year, in a 66” Schneider’s Blizzard Combo - WAY more reasonable cut:
