I am entering the world of eventing and slowly making my way into the show world, that means I’m going to finally have to invest in some tall boots. Unfortunately, I have an incredibly awkwardly sized calf. I’m a short rider, standing at 5 foot 1 there are not a lot of things in the horse world that are sized well for me. I have thick calves at 17" around as well as incredibly short calves at just 14.5" tall. Unfortunately, calves that height are most commonly found in children and 17" calves are apparently most commonly found in taller ladies. The only half chaps I’ve found that fit me are Horseware Ireland chaps but going into shows I would prefer to get myself a pair of tall boots. I am however only entering local schooling shows for the time being and would not like to spend a fortune on custom boots. So finally my question, does anybody know of boots made for shorter, thicker riders that won’t break the bank? Or would I be able to get away with/just have to deal with half chaps? Thanks in advance!

I’m short and cheap and when I had to replace my second pair of Ariats that died after 18 months of wear, I screamed NO MORE ARIATS and stumbled upon this website (Breeches.com) that had quite a few TuffRiders for sale in short. I was very pleased with Breeches.com’s service and found a pair of TuffRiders that fit me very well.

I also found the TuffRiders ran pretty big (I ordered the slim in another style and they were still super-roomy, and I NEVER take slim in any other tall boots).

I ordered a different pair of Tuffriders and found that they ran big. (I’m short and ordered a slim calf, and they were roomy, and I don’t take slim in any other boot).

Thank you, I’ll look at those again. I think I’ve looked at them before and they just weren’t short enough. I may end up just having to go the heel lift route.
I am 5’0", and had the same problem with thicker calves. I don’t remember my exact measurement, but the Tuffrider Baroque Field Boots come in a Wide size. They fit me surprisingly well. They were the only boot I found that even came close.
My granddaughter is short with wide calves. She is thrilled with her Ovation flex sport field boots. She is wearing a 9 wide. There is a n elastic panel next to the zipper that makes it easier to accommodate her calves. As I understand it, Ovation also makes the flex sport plus field boot which may provide even more flexibility for the wider calf and you may even have the option to specify wide and short. (Short as in height). We stole ours at a sale at .Maryland saddlery (heh, we paid 70 bucks with store credit…)! Amazon carries them at @ $199.95. The beauty of Amazon is that it you are a prime member you could order multiple pairs of boots and easily return the ones that don’t fit. Good luck in your search…as someone who struggled with finding tall boots to fit the shorter girl, I feel your pain!
Crap, you got me excited. The “short” is still almost 2" too tall for me. I need about 15", the shorts are 16.75", which reaches the top of my knee cap when I’m standing. The short Baroque’s are 17" tall in my size.
AbiPull - I don’t know if you would consider the half chap/paddock boot route, but Prochaps offers half chaps that start at 15" tall, and multi calf widths at that height. They do have a smooth leather competition version.

I’ll look at those, I’ve never heard of that company! I’m not against half chaps, was just wondering if anybody knew of any tall boots that I hadn’t already looked into, haha. I have some half chaps but they’ve seen better days and wouldn’t be a good option for competing, lol! Thanks!
