Short Tailed Coats

Hi!

Is anyone showing in the short tailed coats? Anyone that’s not tall and slender?

I like the idea and the theoretically look, but I’m tall and not super slender, so want to make sure I don’t look overstuffed into one of those coats and I should just stick to the traditional coat style.

Photos would also be great for those that are willing to share.

I’ve always thought those jackets looked sharp, but had the same concerns. With dark breeches allowed now, they would be much more figure-friendly. With white breeches I think any significant tummy pooch would really be highlighted.

My personal opinion is that a very short coat may sit high across the riders thigh in a straight line, parallel to the horse’s back, and that possibly shows off a bit too much, particularly with white breeches. A longer cut of jacket, where the fabric falls more on a line with the horse’s shoulder, obscures a bit more human thigh and buttock and so, in my eyes, looks slightly more elegant.

And very short, tight jackets make me think the manufacturer is skimping on the fabric!

The short coats can look really sharp, but I think they’re something that needs to be tailored “just so” for each person and their body shape/ratios, which is impossible to do at a mass manufactured scale. Of course, the longer coats don’t match every body type perfectly either, but I think the style is just much more forgiving across different bodies.

All that to say - go try some on, sit on the fake horse in the tack store, and see if you like the way they look on you

I suspect vest points would camouflage a lot

You have to see the new short coat by Pikuer! I saw it on the Amira Equi site.

They’re all the rage here in Colorado, but I saw fewer of them when I went out to Thermal in January and at USDF finals in the fall. FWIW, I agree with the comments above that they need to fit you well, but I’m neither super tall nor super slender and I tend to really like the look.

Fairplay makes a few in their “comfimesh” fabric that are pretty forgiving and also incredibly comfortable – this isn’t an amazing photo of it, but it gives you some idea.

I have a FairPlay short coat and I love it. I am not slim, but I think it’s more flattering than my “traditional” short jacket.
