Shortening Abetta stirrups

Had to replace my old Circle Y pleasure saddle after multiple repairs and went synthetic - an Abetta Trail square skirt. I need the stirrups shorter. They are adjusted to the shortest hole and that is an inch difference between right and left. What is the safest way to shorten synthetic stirrips? It also has very large leather stirrups that probably ad to the overall length, but I need the wider size.
TIA

This person took it to a saddler to re-cut the tops of the fenders: http://www.horsetackreview.com/review-display/10147.html

Or you can get synthetic replacement fenders on ebay - these are pony size and might work better. http://www.ebay.com/itm/King-Series-Replacement-Synthetic-Fenders-Blk-Pony-Size-/400758656093?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d4f13cc5d

There are numerous vendors that sell endurance style fenders/stirrup hangers. Most are leather but that’s fine for a synthetic saddle. Various widths and styles are available. Below is a link to one web site.
