shorter adults on a "hony"??

I was late to the game, not starting riding until I was 12 so I never got to have pony days. I was an eq kid, but my medal horse is now 18 and doing BN with a little eventer and adoring it! Well, about two and a half years ago I had to put down my very first horse to colic…andd promptly went out and rescued a three year old quarter-something. hes a cute mover! and from the tiny bit we have done seems to like jumping and does pretty well with it!

I got him as a three year old, he is coming up on 5. I haven’t sticked him since spring but he was about 14.2 and some change then so I know we are definitely going to end up in hony/horse . I am 24 (no pony hunters for me :frowning: ) 5’2 and a few pounds more than I would like to be but not enough to be close to being too heavy for him. I would LOVE to be able to show him, not the ammys at an AA or anything but maybe some local rated stuff for the fun of it, but I am wondering what my realistic expectations should be? I mean I dont think we will win anyone over for suitability but I feel like I dont look that strange on him?

this video is from spring as well, and his fifth time going over ANYTHING so my mom put some tarps on it to see if she could get me to fall off

please excuse my riding…ive been on and off a hiatus since I got the little thing, at least he takes it well!

Should be fine for local and low classes. Doesn’t look like he has the step for longer lines and combinations found at the rateds in the 3’ Adults.

Local, don’t see a problem. People really don’t care if you get around well.

I love him! I’m also short but not particularly waif-like either and ride a 15h horse. Your guy looks like the type of feisty little spark-plug horses I adore. (I am leasing a Morgan).

ah forgot to mention that, he definitely has the pony canter…we have A LOT of work to be done on his canter, this was more just messing around to see what he thought on a particularly good day but I think regardless we will definitely be doing the adds

Just have fun and see where you get. Hunters will be tricky as he has a short stride (although that may change), but you may eventually have some fun in the little jumpers…sometimes those little ones are little sports cars and can make turns that the big horses can’t manage!

Or look into little fair type shows where they have under saddle classes and a couple jumping classes. those types of shows tend to attract a larger variety of horses and the judges are often more forgiving of unconventional mounts.

I got back to showing on a QH who was 15 hands before the farrier did her feet. I’m 5’7" with long legs, DD is the same and now rides her. She’s wide so takes up leg well - it looks fine.

Many local judges are cool with an even, pretty and consistent add if the hrose just doesn’t have the step in the 2’6" or even 3’ around here. She’s fun in jumpers, too. I don’t think my jumper was much bigger, either, but strides don’t count there.

I’m 5’4 on a tall day and ride a 15hh beast. I’m lucky since horsey has the step and is super adjustable so can go easily from the 12ft stride with a young kid in the pre-child’s to the bigger strides needed to cover the combinations in a 1.15m/1.20m jumper class.

As far as suitability goes I think you look fine and I don’t think that will be an issue at all. The small horses can be a lot of fun!

I’m 5’1" and ride a 14.3 Connemara. I showed in a local, C rated show recently and we were 3rd out of 16 horses in the long stirrup u/s class. Over fences, not as well, but that was my fault.

I spent quite a bit of time showing a 14.3h critter as an adult. We mostly did local shows but occasionally forayed into unrated divisions at C shows (2’6" stuff). I’m 4’10" so I fit her just fine and I never had a problem getting ribbons when we went around nicely. I loved riding her, she was a great size for me.

I’m 5’5" and ride a 14.3 mare who I am starting jumping lessons on this weekend.

Will we go through the levels? Probably not. But she enjoys it, I enjoy it, and we work well together.

He’s cute. Enjoy him and show him.

He looks cute - quiet and steady but as others have mentioned - not built to make a 12’ stride. I think you look good on him and you would make a nice pair on a local circuit!

thanks guys this was helpful! Im not looking to win everything, or relive my juniors…those were the days of much more saddle time but I do miss showing dearly and would like to get out there for fun a bit!

Im considering jumpers, I am a bit of a pansy I would do it on my old eq horse in a heartbeat but I think the greenie and I would both need a bit of support around the ring

He is adorable and has a very cute jump. Do you have a C circuit available? I would go do Special Hunters at whatever height he is ready for. I wouldn’t do the jumpers. Get him going really well and then maybe lease him as a Short Stirrup packer. And enjoy him-he looks fun!!

Why not? He’s adorable. Half the times the local shows seem to be the best of who didn’t screw up. Put in 8 good jumps and enjoy yourself.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. Why don’t you start out in the non-rated hunters, and then if you want to move into the rated shows, try jumpers once you have your confidence back?

If you can get her stride longer, some of the rated shows now have “Small Hunter” classes that are under 15.3 I think. My horse is a bit bigger (15.1) and has a longer stride. We are both too green now, but if I ever have the money, I would love to spend one summer showing her in those classes.

I love honies so much. You don’t even realize you’re falling off, you just end up standing next to them, and even if they can’t exactly turn on a dime, they’re usually at least little enough to make some time cutting turns in the jumpers. Try it! You’ll like it
