Shorter Ladies (<5'5'') : How tall are you, and how tall is your horse?

About 5’3" for me. The paint is a big-bodied 16.1, and the one I’m looking to buy is 14.2. I feel comfortable on both.

I’m 5’1 – in paddock boots

My current horses are a 15.3 big-bodied oldenburg who I feel very comfortable on. And a 17.3 hano gelding who luckily isn’t awfully wide. He’s a bit long and sometimes can be intimidating when he overjumps (he’s green), but I don’t think his height is what makes it scary, just the power. I feel comfortable riding both, though tacking up the big guy can be a challenge (I need a stool to get the saddle on) and a 3-step mounting block is a must! lol.

I do both in the hunters (AOs and Baby Greens respectively)

You guys are cute - since when was 5’5" considered short, though?! That is a height I wish I would see, even with heels on.

I’m 4’11, ride a 15h App. Have a new 1.7 year old who is already 15.2, we’ll see where he pans out 3 years from now.

Thanks for all the answers guys! Makes me feel better… I’m just over 5’4’’ and my horse is hovering under 15.3hh, so I’m hoping I don’t look like too much of a giant on her. I still feel like one, but I’m hoping that will change as she matures and fills out.

And I know 5’4’’ isn’t that short statistically, but I swear, I don’t believe those stats sometimes! I know very few women who are shorter than me; the vast majority are my height or taller (and there are more taller than there are my height).

5’4"" , 2 mares both 16.3 hands. They are both very comfortable to sit on and ride. I can’t get on them without a mounting block, but they really don’t feel big to me when I’m in the saddle

OP, if you want to feel tall, you can come hang out with me whenever you’d like

5’4" and two 14.2 handers, and a retired 16 hand draft cross. I like my little guys, and feel out of place on anything over 16 hands now!

IMO, the ‘statistics’ include the the last few generations and many different races. The average for white females below 40 years old is much shorter than 5’4". Of course, it doesn’t help that I’m 5’4" and the next shortest in my family is my 5’8" mom! I always feel short and adore my 15.3hh horse. I fit my tall parents 16.1-16.3hh horses fine, but I feel more comfortable with my shortie. My next horse will be even shorter!

Disclaimer- I’m a dressage rider, not a hunter. I completely understand the need for a ‘suitably sized’ horse for hunters. Although, my last 16.1hh horse was a hunter and easily had a 15’ stride

5’3" - I’ve had 3 horses - 1st was 15’3"(I fit him well). 2nd was 17’ (I fit him when he was 4 but he really grew that year and his ribs really sprung out). 3rd - 15’1"(on a tall day) - i have short legs and after the 17’ big barreled horse realized I could go small. I don’t however plan on showing this horse at the local/rated hunter/jumping shows as I did the other 2. I bought her to do dressage and lower level 2’ jumping. She could make the distances but I no longer have the desire to jump higher then 2’ or spend all day at a hunter show not knowing when you are going to go. I love in dressage where you know what time you are going to show.

I’m 5’3" and my horse is just under 17hh :frowning: so tall… My last horse was 15.3hh he was perf!

5’ 4 3/4" I typically like horses in the 16 hand range but have an amazing 14.1 hand tank of a gelding (the 6’ fiancé looks fine on him). New mare is 15.1. And my yearling should mature to 15.3-16.1, perfect.

I don’t like horses over 16.2, had a beautiful homebred filly that ended up maturing to 17+ and I sold her because she was too tall for what I like. Everything else was perfect about her I just do not want a moose of a horse.

I’m 5’3 on a good day and I like my horses in the 15-16h range, depending on body/conformation.

My current Tb mare is 15.2h with her wedges on ;), has a medium build, and is a great match for me size wise.
I had a 14.3h, narrow-ish Morgan that always felt a bit short to me (plus the jumps look much bigger from the back of a small horse!) and a 16h WB mare with medium build that was a very good match for me as well.

When I ride my instructor’s 16.3h WB mare, who is rather narrow but looong, it feels to me like my legs should be a few inches longer to keep her together, especially when jumping. Otherwise I don’t feel “small” on her.

5’3" with a short leg, pony is 16h and a tad wide, actually fits very well.

I prefer anything between 14-16h, and 15.1h seems to be my sweet spot. Any taller and I’m not comfortable, unless they are incredibly adjustable.

I’m 5’2" and I’ve owned two QH mares - one was 14.2h and the other 15h.

I’m 5’4"… My heart horse is 16.2 but he’s 24 so I don’t ride him much, my three year old is a large pony, I showed. 14.3 mare in the 3’ hunters a few years back and didn’t feel big either, my 2 yr old should finish about 16hh, an god knows how big my yearling will be. I like 16-16.2 personally. I’ll ride bigger and fit smaller but I like how a 16hh horse can go around th 3-3’6" a tad easier

I’m 5’2" and I used to lease an Appendix QH that was 16.1.

5’4" - I ride a few between 15 and 16 - I prefer 16h

5 feet tall about 125 pounds. 16 hands is perfect for me. 16.2 and narrow is about my max.

I’m 5’5 (on the nose) and my guy is a 1650lb 18.1 (the stick doesn’t touch the ground at 18hh so he’s 18.1-2 ish) WB gelding. I am VERY leggy so I look great on him. I also have a 16.3hh OTTB and a yearling filly. I prefer big horses, 16.3+ with lots of athleticism. I don’t care if they are stocky, slim or medium in build. I ride lots of smaller horses (14-16hh) as well, the smallest right now is 14hh, but I’ve sat on (squashed?) 13.1hh.
