should i use a panacur powerpac

I have a horse who is wormed regularly spring/fall by the vet. This past spring vet wormed before FEC was done, wormed with Ivermectin. FEC came back and it was high, but we had already wormed. 1 month goes by with horse having diarrhea and brown liquid squirts after. FEC was rechecked and was still high…Vet said to deworm with ivermectin again. (which i did reluctantly) horse still has liquid squirts. Thinking a power pac may be needed? Any thoughts as this brown liquid squirt thing is getting out of hand.

Did they tell you what types of worms found in the FEC?

Using what?

How many days between the 2?

Is this 1 month after the ivermectin?

What is “high”? How long after the first ivermectin was this FEC done?

When was the horse last dewormed for tapeworms? Plain ivermectin won’t kill them.

Encysted strongyles can hibernate for a long time until conditions, both inside and outside the horse, are right. Ivermectin, when properly dosed by weight (what dose was used, and how did you calculate your horse’s weight?) will kill adult strongyles, and that can then signal to the encysted strongyles that there’s now room, so they can start up their life cycle again and come out of their encysted state. This can result in another high FEC. The damage done by emerging encysted strongyles can cause great digestive upset for some horses.

Initial spring FEC was done the same day that the wormer (1st dose Ivermectin) was given. Vet went ahead and wormed not knowing FEC results. This is what is typically done so that the vet has record of a wormer being given for colic coverage if something were to ever arise. One ,onth went by between intial dose of ivermectin and the 2nd dose. My horse continued with diarrhea so i insisted we do another FEC…which lead to the 2nd dose of ivermectin. I dont recall initial level of FEC, the second was 350. I looked through notes that i take on my horse from last summer. I went through same issue…horse ended up having pinworms and a powerpac was given. I think she could be on a more tailored worming protocol.
