Should the Desert Circuit be cancelled? Or are you going?

@Moneypitt

“…probably one of”? I would say with 70 horses and most everyone actively competing that is the case. Anyway, methinks reading comprehension might not be your specialty. No matter.

…and I would also say that I don’t think the VAST majority of posters in this thread represent what I’m seeing as the rule, whether it is at our barn or any of the other barns in the Northern California area.

I personally haven’t seen a drop off in participation at shows or interest—be it double digit numbers of horses and competitors down in the desert or the 20 people signed up for NWC here up north.

But hey, maybe I’m wrong.

You are definitely wrong

So I just took a peek at the online entires in Thermal. Another barn, local to ‘yours’ has three times more horses currently competing and showing there. Local as in less than a 10 minute drive from where your daughter rides.

I’m certain other west coast barns have even more entries; especially those located in southern CA.

Have you ever even been down to Thermal to watch the show? How about other NorCal show venues such as Sonoma or Woodside or Menlo?

Sorry to burst your bubble.

You’re not bursting any bubble, I promise.

The fact that KVV or SVS or any other the others have lots of horses bears out my point.

It’s not my experience that what people on this thread are saying is the case; else all the people I know going are selfish, horrible monsters and murderers.

I’m tired of people “making fun” of folks with mask in a car, there could be so many reasons. Short trip to another store, too lazy to take off, and technically, if they want to be super careful, it helps with potential contamination. Full disclaimer, i do not wear mask in car alone, and i don’t let anyone besides those in my house hold ride in my car. But i don’t call people who do “crazy”

Exactly - I may combine multiple errands - drop off the recyleables, drive 1/2 mile, buy cat litter, drive 1/2 mile, buy groceries, drive 1/2 mile, buy gas. I can totally see leaving your mask on if it’s reasonably comfortable. (I don’t because they fog up my driving glasses and I have some difficulty breathing in masks due to my asthma).

You must be a very popular person with that attitude.

And that’s exactly the problem we’re discussing. People who are so self-absorbed they believe their need to prance around a show ring to win ribbons outweighs the need to make some sacrifices right now to protect vulnerable people

When I hear the term “Covid crazies” I assume it refers to the anti-maskers, the “it’s just the flu,” or “it’s a global conspiracy / hoax designed to control us” geniuses.

Anyone else notice the absence of some of the usual GP CA based jumper riders/trainers from Thermal?

Looks like some may have gone all the way across the country to FL to show at WEF?

Others?

Similarly, I grocery shop for other people (through one of the many apps you can use for that). I always leave my mask on in the car if I have other people’s stuff in there.

Amazing that we’re a year into this pandemic and some people STILL don’t grasp that wearing a mask is a beneficial thing for everyone. The willful ignorance… ugh.

I noticed the absence. One or two I know to be at home, though maybe they’ll go for the later weeks. Don’t know who went to FL but that wouldn’t be the circles I run in anyway.

Two hispanic grooms from one SoCal barn died this week from Covid. The barn appears to have attended Thermal, unsure if the grooms did… though it’s rather irrelevant as we (should) all know by now how much the virus loves a road trip.

The men were related. One family lost 2 people in 1 night. What’s terrible is just how freaking predictable this was. My thoughts go out to the family and the barn. The system failed them both.

That’s awful. Prayers for their family

No words.

Prayers to their family.

I wish I could say I’m surprised but I’m not. What did people expect to happen when there is an outbreak of a highly infectious and sometimes fatal disease?

It’s easy for a bunch of wealthy horse owners to brush it off as no big deal but these grooms don’t get paid for sick days. They don’t have access to the state of the art treatments your elected officials did when they got Covid. Many may not even have health insurance. So they are going to get sick. And they’re going to show up at work sick. And still nobody will care until some BNT or rich hunter princess ends up in ICU or lugging around a portable oxygen tank for the rest of their lives.

And then there will be hand-wringing, and GoFundMe appeals, and scholarships established in their memory and people will talk about what a tragic loss it was. All for a bit of ribbon.

In the name of “liberty”. What a shame. So sorry for their loved ones. I hope their employer pays for the burials.

What a shame It is proven they contracted it at Thermal?? I’m sure management will prove cooperative if that’s the case

I’m sure management’s  cooperation will be a great comfort to the grieving families

To clarify, I never claimed it was contracted at Thermal nor do I know if the grooms were actually at Thermal. But, there is definitely a route by which the virus could have hitched a route either to Thermal or from Thermal, thereby impacting two previously separate populations.

This year has shown peoples true colors in so many ways.

We go to mainly one days shows or ship in and out and in my area they have done a great job following protocols and safety precautions - frankly the growth would stop if the same procedures where followed in public!!

There are so many double standards in peoples behavior- I have seen “mask police” who are only so subjectively - for example, and think nothing of butting in line for the vaccine ( sadly happening here in our area)

Even after the vaccine I will keep my mask on hand and wear it - I have always thought we should in many ways after working and traveling in Asia where they are so much more common.

Changing peoples behavior and making them less hypocritical and selfish and self righteous is something that will be harder to deal with.
