Hi! I’m looking for some show barns that are near WUSTL! I’m willing to drive max 1 hour to get there. I would love a barn that focuses on jumpers but I’m not too picky. I would like a barn that goes to A shows. And I don’t know if I’m going to be bringing my horse yet so maybe a barn with good lesson horses/lease options, if that’s possible. Please send suggestions! TIA!
If you end up bringing your horses I highly recommend Altamonte Show Stables. It is just under 40 minutes from WUSTL.
Thanks for the suggestion! It looks perfect! Do you know if they have any social media? I can only find their website
I have done lots of clinics (both riding and setting/timing courses) with Brody, we have some ponies from them at our barn, and I have friends boarding out there - if I lived in STL that is where I would go. If you search “Altamonte Show Stable” you can find them on FB
If I didn’t bring my horse, I couldn’t ride there right? I noticed on their website that they say they have no lesson horses at the moment. Ahhhhhh decisions! I’m all the way from NY so getting my horse down to MO would be hard ! Do you know if they have any lease options available? This really sounds like a perfect fit!
Kennedy also has an A show program and I believe has options for leases available. It’s in Chesterfield, so within your distance range. Micaela’s son is now doing some teaching too.
Irish Fox, Great Griffin, Mechlin and Dublin are likely too far away - at least when traffic is bad, as they’re across the Missouri and hitting 40 all the way over at rush hour is a nightmare.
Altamonte is down 44, which is much easier to travel, and Baskin, KEE and Kennedy are in Chesterfield, so they’re more accessible - and all three have lesson programs which mean you’d have more options for horses to ride…but, therefore, kids too. However, I’m not sure that the presence of kids has any bearing on the seriousness of the program and your own riding…those are show barns with good lesson programs, not local riding barns.
Brody and Jen may be able to arrange a lease for you, but they don’t have a lesson program or lesson horses available. They also don’t have an indoor, which IMO, is pretty necessary in STL for winter.
That’s a huge bummer… I was getting so excited about altamonte I guess I’ll check out all of the other recommendations! I know the WUSTL IHSA team rides out of Baskin so I’ll check them out first. Thanks!
That was from just a couple years ago and might give you more details on recommendations here.
Older, but from someone asking about places near WUSTL as well:

It has been over twenty years since I worked there and many barns I went to are now housing developments but I will say that most every barn was full of very nice people. Of course I did the majority of my calls on the days the barn was closed or emergencies of course. But on the whole the entire horse community-foxhunters to polo to western and beyond- was great.
I had a hard time picking out where to board because there were so many choices. I honestly cannot even remember the name of the barn. LOL It was in Wildwood and began life as a warmblood farm.
Unless there has been a change in the community which I suppose is possible I think you will have many choices and be happy with whatever barn you choose.
Oh and I must have missed the WUSTL memo as it took me a while. Wash U…
Missouri has got to be the state whose schools change names and acronyms more than any other!
Rather than fight traffic be sure to look into barns in Illinois. Many of them are closer/less time to StL than the county. There is East Lake Farm, which is just a bit over the river. There are jumpers and the barn attends A shows. Here is the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/East-Lake-Farm-175310032571095/
I’ve been looking at barns in Illinois and while some of them are really close, most of them aren’t h/j focused. Some of them have more of a western focus which I’m not interested in. East Lake Farm looks nice but I can’t find their address anywhere so I don’t know how far away it is from WashU. I’m trying really hard to look for barns in Illinois because it seems their lesson prices are generally lower and they’re closer to WashU.
For Illinois there is Marshall Show Stables, Indian Hill Farm, and Briarstone Ridinf Academy. Briarstone is the most likely to have something to fit your needs but is the furthest south I think.
Madnessmaddy, I sent you a PM.
Fellow Wash U alumni. I rode at Baskin, the drive was not bad at all even with afternoon traffic and honestly I don’t remember too much kid traffic, but that was 10+ years ago! It was a nice place and the horses were well taken care of from what I saw. I enjoyed riding and learning there. Good luck with your search!
