Show Coat recommendations

I’m aiming to start eventing in the spring after years of only hunting. I’m afraid I’ll roast in my wool coats, so I’m looking for some recommendations on your favorite show coats.

Looking for something with a stretchy/modern fabric (while still having some structure), machine washable with a concealed zipper for the closure. I liked the Ariat Triumph I tried on but it’s a bit more than I wanted to spend.

Is 3 button or 4 button most correct?

Thanks!

I got the Kerrits Competitors coat. It’s 3 button over a zipper, wrinkle resistent and easy care, breathable and stretchy. I got gray  for under $100 on sale. Love it!

I also have the Kerrits Competitors Koat. I got it at horse fair for about $120 in black. It’s unlined so easy to take in and tailor to myself, which I think I may have to do to before I show in it.
I was looking for an affordable tech fabric with a concealed zipper. I tried the Horsewear one on too but it runs very short and I am tall.

I haven’t had the chance to wear it on a horse yet though! I bought my boy this summer and he wasn’t broke so no shows for us til next fall, probably.

I have the Horsewear Competition and really like it! I think it does run a little small, though - I’m 5’2 and quite petite and it fits me perfectly. It doesn’t have a hidden zipper, though.

Welcome back!

I’ve seen too many skinny people look bulgey in the stretchy coats to want one myself (riding =/= standing) so can’t speak to those but have to put in a good word for tropical weight wool tweed RJ Classics. So pretty; such perfect drape. Not that I ever wear a jacket at one days!

I got the Romfh Jumper coat on sale at Horseloverz. It is so pretty that I wear it to work sometimes and got compliments on it there. It has a beautiful cut. It does have buttons but it is so pretty on.

The first size I got was too tight and did make me look bulgy, and I am very average sized, not fat though I was certainly thinner before I had kids. I sent it back and got a size bigger and no bulges at all, it looks perfect. I think the key is not to get one that is too small. Just because you can button it doesn’t mean it fits!!! Getting one that is a little generous in the torso is useful for an active sport.

I did get a bigger cut that my old wool coats, I can still shove myself in the smaller sizes and they will cover up a lot more but…they are also hotter. I don’t want to!

The Romfh coats have Euro sizing so size up at least 2 sizes.

I have this one: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/equine-couture-raleigh-soft-shell-hunt-coat-10291

not a zipper, but I love it. Very comfortable, light weight, and classic. 4-button coats are traditionally dressage, and 3 traditionally jumping. I like the 3-button look with a double vented back, but I think it’s entirely based on personal preference in eventing.

Another vote for horsewear competition coat. Comes in black and navy

I have an RJ xtreme soft shell with four buttons and zipper pockets, and love it.

Devon-Aire’s Signature jump coat. It is machine washable and water repellent…and sells for only $130!

The Grand Prix is pretty nice but not much cheaper.

For eventing 4 buttons will be more typical but it really doesn’t matter.

I love my Kerrits Koat, its machine washable and very comfortable. I think it looks sharp in my pictures and fits well.

I tried on a Tred Step Solo - loved it!!! Am ordering a Solo Pro in Navy and getting a sapphire collar for horse trials and dressage shows. Will use navy collar if I do EQ classes. Stretchy, not shiny fabric, long enough in arms and has a zipper under buttons. I see lots of people wearing quite short coats. I think they look great as long as they fit and surely better than the “frocks” of the past made of heavy wool and quite long and shapeless.

I ended up buying the Tred Step Solo pro! It seemed to have all the features I wanted, and not as pricey as the Ariat Triumph or the Grand Prix models.

Since i’m buying sight unseen, I hope the fit is ok. I’ve read a few reviews that say they run big.

Not a concealed zipper, but I really like the Equine Couture Raleigh and I don’t look ridiculous in it with my thyroid problem induced giant love handles.

ISR - I think mine will be a little large but I’d rather that than too tight or too short in the arms. I can get the waist tailored if necessary.

I love my horseware competion coat!

Yup. Horseware competition coat. The navy looks awesome. It runs small. I ordered both the medium and large in one order so I didn’t have to deal with waiting. Plus smartpak has the free shipping and return on sized items.

The new RJ Classics ones are nice. I ride in one and find it super comfy (stretchy fabric) and it is machine washable!

I tried a Kerrits Competitor Koat on at a horse store, loved it, found one on FB for sale and snatched it up! Very stretchy, looks pretty and its waterproof!

Waterproof is big for me, I always end up showing in the rain for some reason. I like how light it is, and its a jacket that actually doesn’t look awful on me. I’m not skinny, but it definitely makes me look smaller, which is a bonus!

ETA: Bought the black with white piping, very stylish!
