Show Halters - You know you love them.

I finally have a horse I’d like to do grooming and showmanship classes with. It will be good exposure to her before we make our undersaddle debut next season.

She’s going to be an all arounder. I have a sneaking suspicion she’ll do better in hunters than in western pleasure, which is fine by me! But we’re also laying the groundwork to be a nice little Halter and trail class mare, and I want to get her a nice show halter. (Just because it’s local shows doesn’t mean I want to just wash the black nylon breakaway and show her in that)

This weekend we got to borrow a lovely show halter for the photo shoot. Sadly, I can’t con my way into permanent ownership of it, it will remain where it is as a spare should the other halter come to an untimely end.

Now I get to go halter shopping!

What’s everyone’s favorite brands/styles/places to find them?

The other option of course is to get just a leather halter and order the silver accents. I’m open to that too.

Oh, and share photos!

If you are going to do BBHSA, get a leather halter to save money. I saw some for $60 but I believe they are cheap ones.

Have you tried Ebay, or Tacktrader?

Buy the best quality halter you can afford, even if it means buying used. If you take care of it it can last a life time.

Nothing looks as nice as quality silver, and the cheaper trim just doesn’t compare. Proper fit is just as important as quaility, so make sure to take some measurements on your horse to end up with the right size. The better halter makers will do custom replacement parts if something doesn’t fit right…I’ve had extra crown pieces made in custom lengths for several with the same silver tips to match the rest of the halter.

Some brands to be on the look out for: Circle Y, Harris, Kathy’s, Dale Chavez

Look into the Kathys and Dale Chavez for a $250-$350 range halter that is nice, if your pocketbook can afford more I would go Harris all the way! I also really like the Silver Mesa’s and the Deb Moyer’s (I have one of each) but they tend to run $350+.

I would check sites like eBay and TackTrader.com for used ones. Go for the best quality you can afford!

We’re probably going to start out used, but definitely going for fit and quality. Getting Mother’s Day, Christmas, Birthday wishlists together  Will be fun to see what I get spoiled with off those lists (honeyman is becoming such a trooper) and what I end up buying myself. Exciting times.

Photos, people. Photos.

I have bought some cheapy silver show halters in the past. I have now realized they really don’t look great. I am saving to get a Broken Horn, Woods, Kathy’s, etc.

Save your money until you can actually get a nice one…I’ve learned it’s worth it.

Right now, I am sort of “permanently borrowing” a friend’s good silver halter as she no longer shows. Once she remembers this, she may take it back and I will have to take the plunge.

Use the best plain leather halter and lead that you can afford until you’re ready for the big silver splurge.

OK I’ll share the one I have of Diva in the borrowed halter, which is a tad big on her, such a dainty little head

Your link isn’t working.

Hrm. Try this one https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150846500474158&set=t.100000157254673&type=3&theater

Sorry, that doesn’t work either. I’m signed into Facebook, too.

Try clicking on the photo and copying the link. I think that should work.

Noper.

Is it set to private?

It may be private. I didn’t upload it, tagged in it, from the photo shoot this weekend. Give this one a whirl. Or I can just upload it myself. The joys of photo sharing!

That worked. What a fun photo!

Harris, Chavez, Kathy’s…a good halter doesn’t ever go out of style, no matter the color oil. The resale value is there also. I have a friend who had a slightly used Harris yearling show halter that she bought 5 years ago that she just resold for the same about she paid for it.

That works!

Lovely photo. You look very happy together.

Cute photo!

I have a Harris show halter, bought it used off Tacktrader. The seller was getting rid of all of his teen daughter’s show gear since she hadn’t kept her grades up! Several people had emailed him but I was the first one to call, so I got the halter. Half of what it was new, and it didn’t look like it had ever been on a horse.

All the brands mentioned above…but check eBay. Prices are really low.

I recently sold all of my old stock horse stuff and almost new halters I paid from $300-500 for were going for $100-$150. Almost made me cry. The never used Broken Horn yearling halter barely hit $100.

Sucked for me but you might score a good deal!

psst…very cute…but

Run that chain all the way to the ring beneath her ear. Snap it onto the bottom of that, then under her chin and out to your hand. Looks more finished than just clipped to the offside under her chin

SS Tack

I feel your pain. My mare is not a halter horse and we just wanted to get her out, have fun inthe ring and help support our local clubs while the mare trains. But… I didn’t want cheap crap either.
I went with the Billy Royal halter from SS Tack, a bargain and does the job. Not so expensive that if it sits in the closet forever I would feel guilty but not so cheap that it looks it.
