Show Horse taken from stall and slaughtered

“Did they pay for him yet?”

Seriously? What European sellers let you take one on trial to the U.S.??

Edited to add: this thread is growing tedious due to the participants not reading through the posts before adding their two cents. Yes, the horse was paid for, yes the horse was 6 figures … No the Stevens’ did not have any known enemies. Read through the thread.
I don’t know if he was paid for yet I would have insured him.

…or the idea that the horse was targeted in quarantine. I mean sure, it could have happened that way, but seriously, how many show horses in equally opportunistic settings did they have to pass to get to this ONE horse in Bradenton? It’s not like there is a shortage of show horses between there and Miami, you have to pass Davie, Southwest Ranches, Wellington and half a dozen other places that have plenty of show horses and race horses. And if your brand of vast conspiracy is this was done to strike a blow at the horse show world due to the Loxahatchee bust… Loxahatchee is far closer to Wellington than Tampa. It does rather strain common sense as well as credulity to think that is the link.

It’s seems far more likely that the criminals were local, maybe this group worked as feed store delivery personnel (or gets tips from someone who does) so they can get a better idea of the layout instead of relying on google earth. Maybe they knew about it because a disgruntled former employee tipped them off. Maybe they were just a little desperate for money and looked for farms with good access points, relied on google earth and took a risk and got away with it (hopefully that part does not remain true).

I am watching channel 10 Tampa. They are saying the Manatee police are looking for 2 men who they believe have information on the horse slaughter. Pictures of the guys are posted in the story. Said to be driving a white van.

I’ve always thought it was a really bad idea to have just the rear license plate for vehicles in Florida. They may have gotten at least a partial number for the van.

I really hope they catch these guys!

America’s Most Wanted is no longer on the air. But John Walsh has a new show similiar to AMW called The Hunt. I’m not sure he’d take on a case like this though. I think his show is for bigger cases like rape, human murders, etc. But Nancy Grace talked about it so who knows. The best way for them to get more exposure is to go to the major new outlets like GMA, Today Show, etc and try to get them to air the story. I don’t know if they’d be interested in it.
John Walsh’s wife rides, and is an avid foxhunter! They have been out numerous times with Live Oak Hounds (she on a horse, he rides in the truck following the hounds). I do not know if she hunts elsewhere.

Out of curiosity, why do they believe these men have information? Or is that sort of stuff not released to the public?

Perhaps they said something while in the store, or perhaps there was something about them or the van that raised a question. Also given what was taken, you need something large vehicle-wise to transport.
That sort of stuff not likely to be released at least for a while…

my bet is “believed to have information” is cop code for “we think they are guilty, but will not say that until we question/charge them, or gain more evidence one way or another.”

Oh. They are “Persons of interest” in today’s non judgemental lingo. Something like “unindicted co conspirators” in past years?

Either way, if they weren’t basically greedy and stupid, they’d never get caught. Most can’t shut up long enough for the statute of limitations to expire. That 30k makes it even less likely.

BTW, over a certain value, many skip the insurance. Just multiply your own premiums by the likely insured value of these 6 figure horses for the reason why. It’s a lot of money, as in a lot a lot. Hard to cover that as a pro off lesson and show fees or pass it on to even well heeled clients.

“The reward fund to help catch the killers has grown to more than $50,000.”

New update: “Manatee County sheriff’s detectives investigating the October slaughter of a horse are talking to two people who may have information on the case.”

Rate My horse Pro has pictures of the men (persons of interest) in the story. I didn’t know if anyone had posted it. I could not grab the link .

The vehicle is a small RV; in two weeks those men could have gone anywhere.

But if the cops are talking to the two men, they must have been found.

I don’t think the cops are talking to them, I think they’re trying to find them so they can talk to them… That was the sense I got anyhow.

That does say they had “only limited information”, not that they were totally ignorant of what went on

Three horses are missing just south of Palmetto, in Sarasota.
