They majorly upped their security which prevented another horse from being killed. I’m not sure how this is not enough for you? Yes, it would be great if they had caught the person trespassing… but scaring them off the property is certainly a huge step.
According to the news report, they have spent “10’s of thousands of dollars” on security.
Evidently the cat has tripped the alarm several times – so perhaps Steve and Debbie did not jump right out of bed and race to the stable. They have installed locking iron bars around the front of the shed row stalls so no horse can be taken — but the thief would not have known that until he tried to get the horse out of the barn area.
Who would have thought that the same people would come back. Interesting about each horse being targeted within days of it coming out of quarantine…
There was another horse stolen and butchered for meat in Homestead, Miami-Dade Co.) around Thansgiving. It was someone’s pet/pleasure horse .
That is incredibly freaky. I imagine most barns in Florida are like CA, set up for air flow with multiple doors and windows and not easy to just lock up. And once you start doing things like locking stall doors there is a trade off with security vs being able to evacuate quickly if needed.
Maybe they need a giant flock of geese and some serious motion activated floodlights. A lot of rural properties around here have installed those (thanks meth!) and I have to say they really do work fairly well as they are just so bright. Very annoying but quite effective.
I’d be very freaked out if people were just wandering into the barn in the middle of the night. But how do you completely seal up a farm?
To me, it seems like a vendetta against the farm owner. There is no word of other horses, owned by other parties, coming out of quarantine and being butchered.
I must say that I find the fact that $50,000.00 was raised on Go Fund Me, and only $30,000.00 is being offered as a reward odd. The site says the other $20,000.00 is in a non profit that will assist in prosecuting the butchers if they are ever caught.
But prosecution will be done by the DA without any financial assistance what so ever. Especially from a biased non profit.
Most odd.
I don’t know. I think they need an alarm that once tripped releases about 4 or 5 GSD’s - protection trained from Czech border patrol stock. I would think being suddenly being confronted with that would scare the bejeezes out of just about anybody. And would slow the perps down enough to be arrested or shot.
And if somebody came prepared for the dogs you would know it was an inside job.

It appears the horse butchers may have returned to the scene of the crime:

And per Mr Stephens there is the possibility their two imported horses were put on the kill list at the quarantine facility: "The recent horse brought in was housed in the same area. And the similarities between the two horses doesn’t stop there.
“He was purchased on the same shopping trip as Phedras but was not cleared to come over. There wasn’t room on the plane he had to wait for a flight, stuff like that,” Stephens said. “And the same carriers brought him over. He came out of same quarantine in Miami. So, you start to say is there a connection here is somebody just watching that station.”[/QUOTE]
How do the people at quarantine know where the horse is going after they get out of quarantine. Maybe that is a standard question I don’t know.
It almost happened again:

Obviously they have a way of finding out. They were able to trace down two horses to The Stevens farm. They got the info of where they went from someone, probably at the quarantine facilitiy. I’m guessing that there’s someone who works at that facility that is helping them, someone who has access to information of where each horse is going. I could be wrong.
