Show Horse taken from stall and slaughtered

I bet you anything there is employee involvement here. Most likely someone who worked for them or who worked at the quarantine place. Or someone who had at least been on that farm before. Even the garbage collector.

And perhaps somewhat relevant, since it sounds like they might have picked this horse in part because he was easy to handle. Too bad they didn’t go into the wrong stall and end up trying to lead a stallion like Halo or Dynaformer out with just a rope.
Or John Henry if he were still alive…

Before this happenned I was clueless to the slaughter of horses for their meat in Florida and I live here in central Florida. I’ve never heard anything on the news or in the papers. But this incident has made the national news and it’s probably due to the fact that the Stephens are famous on the horse show circuit.

Years ago I was awakened in the middle of the night when I heard noises outside and it turned out to be someone trying to steal one of my horses. They were parked on the road next to the barn with a horse trailer. Thankfully I was able to scare them off. But I never found out who it was and the police didn’t do squat! Hopefully these people (that’s too nice of a term to call them!) will be found soon!
I also live in the Tampa Bay area.

There were a number of articles a few years ago that I was able to find. However, the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office report concluded that “mass horse slaughter for sale of human consumption” in Hillsborough County (as alleged by the head of ARM(Richard Couto)) proved to be inaccurate and unfounded along with “illegal” slaughter of other animals . It was apparent that Couto was exaggerating the scale of the problem. I hope Couto’s “crying wolf” a few years ago does not impede additionally investigations now that this atrocity has occurred.

Why would anyone post such a picture? I certainly do not want to see that!

This has been going in South Florida for years. One sick case in 2009, that I will never forget, was of a mare butchered alive with a foal at her side.
I was told by a cat rescue that a volunteer was feeding a feral colony behind a supermarket near Orlando and smelled something bad. In the dumpster was butchered horse remains. The police and humane society were called. They did NOTHING.
I pray this very public case helps put an end to it. This has been going on too long.

I totally agree. The story is horrific enough.

Wow…is it just me, but, this could be a horrifying book or movie when more details come out.

What picture?

Santiago Cabrera was sentenced to 5 years on 12-17-10 and along with him, Luis Cordero was sentenced to 4 years on 2-1-11 for killing 2 horses for meat in the Miami-Dade area. Taken at night, walked to a remote area and same manner. Twenty horses were killed in 2009 when they were arrested but they were only prosecuted for 2. Note: Cordero would be out now and possibly if let out early, Cabrera is too. It was said they were part of a bigger ring but not proven. Just mentioning.

A pic of this horse after it was butchered. I am not sharing the link. I don’t want to see it again.

Now the same guy is harking that show horses are targets loudly and publicly weeks prior and poof one gets targeted.

I think a lot of his “infiltrating” is over embellished. Even if his motives are for the benefit of the animals. It sniffs of self promotion…
And if the person is in this country illegally???
Then they get deported.

The night the horse was taken there was a full moon, or close to it. If I lived in that area with my horse, I would be super vigilant on those bright nights, because I imagine the light is important to avoid using flashlights.

It’s unbelieveable that someone would post such a picture! I don’t want to see it and hope that it doesn’t show up on my FB feed! Some people are sick.

It just now showed up on my Facebook feed, shared to a local group I belong to. I did NOT want to see that.

Praying that they catch the people responsible for such a gruesome act.

That means it’s spreading around FB. It should’ve been taken down the first time it showed up.

Figured I’d post this artice from 2012. For those who aren’t familiar with Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County is north of Manatee County.
I also was wondering how this may or may not impact some of the FL winter show circuits: Wellington and/or Ocala… I understand that this was in the Tampa area not close to the above, but if this along with other horse killings in FL may lessen attendance.
^^^This

But now the story has traction, with national exposure, William Shatner, and a piece in the NY Times (read nationally).

Even if ONE owner decides not to participate in Wellington, it’s had an effect. One owner at Wellington = a substantial amount of money invested in the local economy.
