Show Jump Rules Question

Show jump question. What are the regulations for “touring” the ring or showing your horse a particular stadium fence before you’re whistled and cross through start markers at a recognized event? I believe its allowed but correct me if I’m wrong! Never had a reason to do so until this guy. Much thanks in advance!

I am in no way a “seasoned” Eventer and do only unrecognized but I was always under the impression that once you entered the ring, up until they ring the bell, you can walk by any of the jumps. I never seem to have time though. At most of the events I go to, as soon as I enter, they ring the bell so I don’t have much time for that.

OP, so maybe it would be better to clarify what is “touring”. I think you can you can ride along the jump but can’t present to a jump straight on . So i’ve been told.

You are allowed to ride past any part of the arena or any jumps you want but you cannot present your horse to a jump straight on, let them sniff it, or in any other way blatantly try to show the jump to your horse before your round. I saw someone break this rule however at a recognized event and she did not get in trouble but I think she just got lucky. Hope this helps :).

Actually, you can. This rule was changed (a few?) years back. In fact at Rolex a couple of years ago, many riders were giving their horses a good look at the mountain range triple bar prior to starting.

Just make sure your horse doesn’t decide to jump from a standstill. (Or like one adorable pony I saw at an event, grab the flowers from the groundline and end up knocking the whole thing over.)

It is perfectly OK to present your horse to the jumps (including letting them sniff them) before you cross the start line.

It has been AT LEAST TEN YEARS since that rule was removed.
