Im taking my horse to his first show in June, I was told by the show officials that it’s fairly relaxed however I was also told that for hunter classes they prefer the traditional outfits. So I’m not sure how much that would effect how they view the rest of the classes. I know show jumping, whether on its own or in a 3 day event, is pretty relaxed as far as clothing goes I just didn’t know how “unusual” I guess my outfit might be. I was planning on gray breeches, with a nice white polo, and black belt. For my horse I was going to do a black pad with gray piping and white half pad and I’ve got a gray, black, and white ear bonnet for him. Are the gray breeches alright? I don’t often see them which is the only reason I was wondering. I know tan and white are the most popular I just didn’t want to stand out in a bad way especially considering I’m sure the baby horse experiencing his first show monsters will make us noticeable enough
I’m confused. Are you riding hunters? Jumpers? What level are you speaking of?
Is this a local schooling show where no one is dressing for show?
From your post I do not know what discipline you are showing nor what level the show it.
Best bet is to contact the show and ask what is expected attire for whatever classes you are showing. If you are showing hunters, it seems they have told you what they expect, which is traditional attire, ie a jacket, with horse outfitted for hunters.
That said:
The turn out you have described would not be “appropriate” for hunters at most shows. Even for a schooling show you probably want a white fitted pad and no ear bonnet. While white breeches are standard for jumpers, they are not for hunters; grey is fine.
For jumpers, this turn out would be perfectly acceptable for most days/shows. Grey breeches are also fine. Even at the FEI level, many people wear whatever they want (ex. polos and whatever breeches) except on mandated dress days where they must wear white breeches and coats.
yes sorry about that, I’ll be doing the jumper classes. The officials have just told me they are rather strict for hunter and eq classes and it makes me wonder if they’ll be the same for the jumper classes as well.
I would just bring your coat. Everything else you describe is fine for jumpers. If they want a coat/everyone is wearing coats, just put yours on. That’s what my rider does when he gets in trouble one minute before walking in the ring for not having his coat on.
Your described attire is fine for jumpers.
Please provide pictures after the show, I love gray
There are specific rules for Hunter and Eq attire at Rated shows . Not for Jumpers other then basics (breeches, boots, helmets etc) unless formal attire is so stated on the prize list and that’s normally only seen in higher level classes like Grand Prix. Even then it just adds a jacket and most go with white breeches.
Theres no national written rules for anything at schooling shows, you need to ask them or just wear what everybody else is when you get there.
What you are planning to wear would fit in just fine anywhere I’ve shown or watched, including Rateds and schooling shows in varioys parts of the USA.
