If McLain hadn’t had to go first in the jumpoff, I think odds are good he would have been the one who pushed a little bit more and came out on top, but he rode a plan reflecting that position in the order and you could see on his face after Andre’s round he knew he could have pushed more. But still, he and Ilex produced three great rounds and showed why they are on the team, second in that class is a great result!

The Rolex livestream showed a great head-to-head video of Ilex and Chakaria which showed that even though Chakaria was belting around like a little egg beater, Ilex led right up to landing from the second to last jump. That little creature went into hyperdrive at that point. I hope someone cleverer than me can find that video and post it.

It’s always fascinating to watch those side-by-side videos and see what tiny details end up making the difference.

I read the same article and I know he said Quimi was not quite ready, but to me it sounded as though he thought Ilex was more a horse for the future as well although he did sound positive about him. He’s not going to say none of his horses are ready or he wouldn’t make the team. And in the same article he also said that he thinks the more senior team members need to step aside to allow the younger riders to move up, yet he’s not stepping down. I’m glad to see that Ilex performed so well at Aachen, it sounds as though he is peaking at just the right time.

McLain said: “Ilex [an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Baltic VDL—Calendula, Chin Chin) owned by Bonne Chance Farm, Gilberto Sayão da Silva, and Ward] is a very exciting horse. He finished Florida by placing second in the [$500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI5*] in Wellington. We haven’t had a lot of time together, but things really came together quickly.”

Tell me where he said or implied Ilex was not ready. He said things came together.

That’s a weird cherry-picking of this interview. This is what he said: “Kent [Farrington] now is coming into his prime. Laura [Kraut] obviously has been at the top for quite a long time now. And I hope that I have a little bit of time left in me. But I won’t go forever. Young people have to come up.”

He is at the top of his game. Why would we want him to step aside for young people for the Olympics, anyway? The system Ridland is using seems to be working great- send one or two seasoned competitors along with a couple of younger ones to some of the team competitions and give these up-and-comers (and their horses) the best chance of getting really good experience. Those are important competitions, but they are not super high-stakes, like Aachen or the Olympics. The Olympics is not the place we want our best riders “stepping aside,” and to these younger riders it would be like saying: “Ok, so to get your feet wet we are going to chuck you into the middle of Lake Michigan. Good luck!”

Worth repeating.

Interesting post from McLain. Apparently Thieme’s margin of victory in the Grand Prix was smaller than originally thought.

He’s such a class act! I’m glad to see the correct timing posted; his ride was so smooth

It just proves that the timer technology can be temperamental anywhere!! Even at Aachen.

Does anyone know if it’s going to be available to watch on clipmyhorse.tv?

Usually only NBC can show the Olympics. This is the schedule now
