Yeah I’ve wondered if there isn’t a way to keep that thing out of sight, because. There’s a jumping bat in there, too. If I push it to the bottom to be covered with stuff, then later it’s hard to get to and extract. Sometimes I open up the hatch when there is a non-horsey person standing there. I don’t know what they think …
Whip…schmip…
Doesn’t everybody keep a hoof stand and trimming stuff in their car? Red bag on the right is my equine first aid kit. I moved barns and had to park the trailer at home so that stuff travels with me now.
I should have used the hoof stand for another purpose a week ago. I helped my sister take her new, heavy and verrry expensive sewing machine to a workshop. It is in a case on wheels. I thought I had it blocked, wedged it in. I should have used the hoof stand. As soon as we opened the hatch, it fell out. It was damaged but the shop was able to put it back together (we took it the day before the workshop) and she said it worked fine. Whew.
Just tell them you need it for when the traffic gets behind your leg!
No photo for this one, but I was at the Drug Store on my way home from the barn, in the winter, during a pretty cold spell. Big insulated winter muck type boots and wind/waterproof breeches, and a big stinky barn coat.
A women in the aisle looks me up and down and goes…“did you come from a barn?”
Turns out, her daughter was at their barn for a lesson and mom was running errands and seemed so proud she ID-ed another horse person in the wild hahaha.
Thank you for this thread! I laugh every time I check it!
Usually I just get a stare and then people-- especially if they’re moms with young children-- quietly step away from me. I have been told it is the Barn Scent, which is especially strong in the winter because of pulling off turnout blankets. That task imparts a certain… eau d’ equine funk.
I used an old D-ring snaffle as a paperweight on my desk at work.
Got a lot of {winkwinknudgenudge} until someone told me they thought it was handcuffs.
Apparently the movie Titanic had a pair featured
@Paint_Party Funny, other horsepeeps either don’t notice or don’t care
A good horse friend of mine cares a lot more about how she comes off in public than I do. I am in barn clothes nearly all of the time I’m out somewhere and I don’t mind one bit if my stink and aesthetic helps keep people out of my bubble
Hahahahha. My local ABC liquor is where I stop weekly for my horses beer (non sweater) and also Mommas Prosecco. . Saturday night I walked in on the way to a party after a friend asked me to pick up a bottle of Tito’s. The cashier exclaimed. Omg April, Ive never seen you out of “horse clothes”. How’s Happy (my horse) doing? He must be sweating again unless vodka and eggnog work for that. lol!
I think my odor awareness was heightened because of one specific experience in a Target store a few years back. I was Christmas shopping, still in my damp winter barn clothes, and started searching through bins of ornaments. A woman literally pulled her kids away. I heard her say to them as an explanation (or warning?), “That woman smells.”
But hey, I did get to paw through the entire bin of Christmas tree ornaments by myself. So there is that.
I didn’t think of that. So I guess I don’t need the clean coat in the back seat after all, to switch to if I’m going in somewhere after the barn.
I did meet a couple of non-horsey friends for HH at a nice upscale place one time (much cheaper at HH, can supper on appetizers) without changing clothes (spring, so hadn’t been all that hot – or cold). They smilingly assured me they didn’t mind at all. But they were faking it.
Whereas my horse friend, with whom I once ate a Subway sandwich while sitting on a curb beside a parked trailer so we could supervise our goofy OTTB’s with the ramp down and everything open for air, in post-horse trials horse clothes, … that friend genuinely does not care.
K, y’all. Who bought your Christmas gifts at either the feed store or Tractor Supply ???
Awesome local feedstore has super-cute handmade bird feeders, plus the best thing ever: 1 lb bags of whole shelled pecans. Carefully managed. The pecans are really all whole when you buy them. It’s down to you what happens then.
They have handy-dandy stuff for pets as well, that you won’t find at the retail stores.
Your fam & friends already know that if the feed store or Tractor Supply doesn’t have it, you are not likely to ever buy it.
I love this thread so much! Thanks for starting it. 🩷
Omg I miss the hay exchange!! I can’t believe it’s still there!
You would go nuts for it now! It’s not just a giant warehouse full of gorgeous hay. It’s G5 Farm and feed. Mostly geared towards Western but tons of good supplies for the barn.

My odor awareness increases on the drive home, when the foot-heaters in the car remind me of where I just was… hahaha
Here’s another.
You have random stashes of these things and you spend mental energy thinking about uses or things you can make from them.
The day I started just throwing away hay string was so freeing! There’s always some in the trash if I need it. Not “saving it for later” and dealing with piles is so nice
Or how about when you wash your hair? As soon as the water hits my head my first thought is, “I’m going to need some more shampoo.”
