Show Me Your Greyhound

So I have begun the process to adopt a greyhound! I have been dreaming of it and researching for a long time now, and am soooo excited.

I’m hoping to get a smaller female. I don’t really care what color, except I don’t want an all black dog.

Tell me about your greyhound! And you MUST share pictures.

Oh - and do they make Baker dog blankets that fit them?

We’ve had greys for about 10 years now.

Their personalities vary a LOT! Our first grey was a typical couch potato and VERY shy. Was afraid of the cats and refused to do stairs unless necessary. We never really trained her except for “Where’s Daddy?! Go find him!” and “Go home!” (in case of emergencies). Had pretty much no stamina and despised running.

She was velcro dog to my dad. She would literally sulk in the closet and not come out when my dad went on business trips. She was SO happy when he retired.

She barked about 3 times her whole life and rooed about 10.

She has to be put down about 2 years ago due to laryngeal paralysis. It was scary and I wasn’t even there.

Our current greys are complete opposites from one another.

Our fawn girl is Daddy’s Little Girl. Loves small children and will kiss their faces all over. Mostly very well behaved. Pretty lazy and definitely seeks out comfort. She took over what used to be a heated cat bed (for 2 cats - or a medium dog bed, but still too small to be completely comfortable for her).

She apparently enjoys the hammock as well…

And doesn’t like sharing beds…

She was incredibly easy to train. She will sit, down, paw, other paw, bang! (play dead), and crawl. And of course come here, though sometimes she can be a little obstinate about it. Lazy unless provoked (our other greyhound starts to run). Good with the cats - not afraid of them, but ignores them mostly. My old cat would sleep beside her.

Our other grey…we don’t think she’s a real greyhound. We think there’s a Jack Russell in that brain of hers.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/17858_1336704227781_1536362627_890654_4515348_n.jpg

She wants to run and play every time we go outside. We fenced in our yard so that we wouldn’t have to bring her to a dog park every day. She loves to zip around the yard and bounce up and down. Occasionally will try to chase the cats but never has a prey instinct with them. Doesn’t really get training and will sometimes just mimic our fawn to get a treat.

She chooses to lay down on the hardwood floors and sulk rather than lay on a bed. Follows anyone anywhere. Upstairs, downstairs, doesn’t matter. New person, new place, always exciting! She probably has a separation anxiety - sometimes when I’d be home and my parents would go out I would hear her start to whine pathetically and yelp. Lay on the wood flood outside the laundry room until they’d come home. The fawn doesn’t seem to mind being alone though.

When the pond is not frozen, she will go in - regardless of how cold it is.

(These are from the summer though)

Very in your face kind of dog (or head in the crotch)

And always wants to play (especially football or frisbee!)

Also always wants to play tug of war with every toy and she never gives up or drops it unless our fawn interferes. She also barks like a crazy dog every day. Most of the time it’s because she wants to go out and pee. She pees a LOT. Because she likes to run around a LOT and then drink water a LOT.

We also don’t understand how she got so fat since our other grey eats more food and exercises less…

(compare this last shot to the porker she is now: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/35339_564339776576_17505149_32738636_4951947_n.jpg She WAS a little girl! She’s outgrown the belly band of her coat now.)

Never saw baker blankets on a greyhound - their backs tend to be longer and straps may be designed for dogs who are not so “curvy” as greyhounds. I call them Barbie dogs - big chest, tiny waist, long limbs. Definitely can’t use the Baker collar on them though since you need a martingale collar or else they could slip out of the collar if they wanted to! Also better to apply gradual pressure to slow on the leash rather than a quick yank (which could potentially break the neck - which is why you’re never allowed to put them on a run in case they take off after something at 40mph and are jerked back by the neck suddenly).

Is that enough photos? I can probably find some more…

I must say, after seeing a greyhound rescue at a parade recently, I am besotted with them! I think it’s their faces that just make them look slightly sad, like they desperately need a hug. I’m not in a position to take in a dog at the moment  - but I just know what it’s going to be when I can! Which sadly may be several year’s time, but you know… planning ahead. TB7 your pics are just gorgeous. They look so full of personality.

TB7, is one of your pictures from the Morristown St. Patrick’s Day Parade? I thought the green coat the dogs are wearing looked like GFNJ’s coats. We used to create the “float” (decorated utility trailer) for the parade for several years before we moved out of state.

We’ve had a total of 4 greys for about 10+ years now, two were fosters initially. Love them, but would caution that they are not farm dogs. We have a small farm now and I often think of getting a different breed next time, but don’t know if we would be happy not having greyhounds, they are so unique, so loving, so entertaining.

We love greyhounds, too. We live on acreage and ours were definitely ok on a farm regarding animals, but we did have them fenced in. Being females they did not have too much roaming sense I guess, but just in case…

I would say that my own personal greyhound is one of the closest dogs I have ever had, we just loved each other and I miss her still.

They do very greatly, and a letter to your rescue will help them find a good match - ours certainly did. They will take time to settle in since so much is foreign to them, but everyone assured us they would, and they did. Even the grocery bags’ rustling sound scared them and the vacuum cleaner - wow, orbit.

The first night our first one came she whined all night until I brought my sleeping roll down to lay down with her and put my hand on her. This went on for 3-1/2 nights before I could get back to my own bed. Perhaps tht is why we bonded so well. It was that or allowing her on our bed (forever).

I’m so happy you are giving one of these beautiful, graceful animals a chance.

We adopted an older ![](reyhound who had washed out of several homes. He’s about 10 years old now. He’s not a bad dog, but somewhat neurotic and needy. And definitely a ‘barker’. He’s the first sighthound I’ve owned that barks.

But his life has changed dramatically in the last year, since we acquired our Deerhound pups - in a good way. He’s now the default leader of a rowdy band of adolescent Deerhounds. For whatever reason, this seems to make him feel more secure. Or maybe they just wear him out? Hard to say why, but he’s much happier these days.

This is “Uncle” Will and his Deerhound pack…

He’s also good with our house cats… note the sleeping kitty.

I love all the pictures on this thread! Greyhounds are such beautiful dogs. Friends of mine adopted 2 greyhounds last year and after being around their dogs, my fiance and I are hooked! We plan on getting a greyhound (or 2!) as soon as our living situation allows.

YUP! My mom actually made the coats for our two - that’s why they’re “fancy” with the shamrocks! Just about everyone else had the GFNJ coats though…except the one new owner who dyed her grey green! That poor grey was SHIVERING, but owner didn’t want to cover up the dye job and said he wasn’t cold. Ours had their Shamrock coats OVER their regular winter coats and our fawn girl was still cold! I took off my tube scarf at one point and made her a snood while we waited. - If it’s cold enough that you need a jacket, it’s definitely cold enough that the grey needs a jacket what with their 5% body fat…or more like 7-10% if you’re our brindle girl.

I have a 7 yr old female, Anya, who is hands down the easiest dog I own. She babysits 7 chihuahuas all day. She is quiet, she is clean and she is lazy! Her happiest moments are when she can come inside and find a place to snooze. She’s a white with big brindle spots. Love her to death and have never had a single issue with her other than when she so furiously wagged her tail that she hit it on a table, broke it, and had to have a partial amputation which cost me $400 in vet bills!

…seven Chihuahaus — oh my! My special greyhound was white with brindle ears.
